Did you know that there are diagnostic techniques in acupuncture (which is a part of Chinese Medicine)?

For example, your practitioner will likely feel your pulse on both wrists. Direct contact with our patients allows us to understand you and your condition more thoroughly.

Practitioners may also press on your abdomen, arms/legs, and even look at your eyes and tongue to understand what’s going on.

Of course we will also listen to your story about what’s hurting.

After gathering information, a practitioner will choose a treatment principle. Understanding the principle allows us to choose a pathway; then acupuncture points.

After stimulating the points, we will feel your pulses, look at tongue, listen to your noticings etc.. again to determine what kind of effect our treatment design had on you.

Did you know that these methods existed? 😮

秋 Autumn

The left side of the Kanji refers to the harvest. The right side has a double meaning. It can be interpreted as the sun which withers the husks of the harvest. It can also refer to the fire farmers use to burn away the husks of the harvest.

In both cases it is natural to be in awe of nature at this time. It is amazing that the sun, earth, and farmers can produce food for everyone. It is amazing that the time for growing comes to an end. And it is amazing that the husks whether withered or burned provide the minerals for next years crop.

If physicality is the shadow of dynamic movement, then it implies that nothing every really departs, rather it changes form.

Autumn:

(From Ilza Vieth's translation of The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine)

"The three months of Fall are called the period of tranquility of one's conduct. The atmosphere of Heaven is quick and the atmosphere of the Earth is Clear.

People should retire early at night and rise early .. . They should have their minds at peace . . .

All of this is in harmony with the atmosphere of Fall and all this is the method for the protection of one's harvest."

Commentary:

Autumn is amazing.

And so are you.

SUMMER!

"The three months of Summer are called the period of luxurious growth. The breaths of Heaven and Earth intermingle and are beneficial. Everything is in bloom and begins to bear fruit.

After a night of sleep people should get up early (in the morning). They should not weary during daytime and they should not allow their minds to become angry.

They should enable the best parts (of their body and spirit) to develop; they should enable their breath to communicate with the outside world; and they should act as though they loved everything outside.

All of this is in harmony with the atmosphere of Summer and all this is the method for the protection of one's development."

"The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" Translated by Ilza Veith.

On our calendar, we have just begun Spring. And, what if I told you that on Nature's clock Spring began in early February- that March 20 actually represents the middle of Spring?

Things begin before their fullness.

So begins the second chapter of book one of "The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" (Veith's translation):

"The three months of Spring are called the period of the beginning and development (of life). The breaths of Heaven and Earth are prepared to give birth; thus everything is developing and flourishing.

After a night of sleep people should get up early; and they should walk briskly around the yard; they should loosen their hair and slow down their movements; by these means they can (fulfill) their wish to live healthfully.

During this period (one's body should be encouraged to live and not be killed; one should give (to it) freely and not take away (from it); one should reward (it) and not punish (it).

All this is in harmony with the breath of Spring and all this is the method for protecting one's life."

It is interesting to note that this foundational text of Chinese Medicine essentially begins with a description of human's relationship with nature followed by a discussion of the four seasons. The seasons are discussed before Yin/Yang, before the charge of the organ systems, before methods of treatment etc... It is interesting that reference to the seasons and natural phenomena then thread it's way through all nine books.

Happy Spring!

A word about acupuncture points.

The first thing to understand is that they are not something "extra." Really when we are talking about acupuncture points, we are discussing areas of sensation on surface anatomy that a practitioner feels under his/her fingertips.

*Sometimes the points are an area of sensation that the patient feels due to a practitioner pressing on them.

*Sometimes the points are an area of sensation the practitioner feels even when a patient may not notice the sensation.

Finding points in this way contributes to the "patient centered care" that patients often describe when talking about acupuncture. Whereas most tests being done by modern medicine are through the lens of a machine, finding and pressing on acupuncture points has no intermediary between the practitioner and patient. It is one of the tools acupuncturists use that allows for a free flow of treatment design in the moment.

Both means of medicine have their strong points and weak points. As for acupuncture, "getting to the point" is from direct experience -a way to really get to know you.

"The three months of Fall are called the period of tranquility of one's conduct. The atmosphere of Heaven is quick and the atmosphere of the Earth is clear.

People should retire early at night and rise early in the morning. . .
They should have their minds at peace . . .
Soul and spirit should be gathered together in order to make the breath of Fall tranquil . . .

All this is in harmony with the atmosphere of Fall and all this is the method for the protection of one's harvest."

-From The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, Book 1. Translated by: Ilza Veith

How can the mind be at peace? Let go of what no longer serves. Be in awe

How can one gather soul and spirit? Let go of what no longer serves, and keep the gems and what you love. Be in awe. Breath deep.

Bow to what is.

Those are all gifts from the Autumn Season.

Humans are a part of nature. And like everything that is alive, we need to breathe in awe and p**p out what no longer is useful for life (and retain the gems). That is a way to stay refreshed.

A practice: Throw away all bits of things (like rubbish) you'll never use. Notice how you are in your body before and after doing that.

While there are varying schools of thought regarding what should be emphasized in treatment design by acupuncturists, one thing is certain: the reality of acupuncture as a viable/valuable form of medicine cannot be ignored.

For centuries, acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been the sole medical system in many Asian countries. Unfortunately, our modern Western medical and scientific communities are just beginning to catch up.
