Holiday party eating was a big topic in sessions this week. Here are a few things to think about when you are out celebrating.

☃️ Observe your eating with compassionate curiosity. If you are critical of the way you eat, it disconnects you from how you are feeling. You can get stuck in your head and disconnect from the eating experience. If you do not like an eating behavior of yours, notice it and observe. This will help you much more than beating yourself up.

❄️ Be Intentional with Alcohol Consumption. Drinking alcohol disconnects you from eating. Most people eat more than what feels comfortable to them as alcohol consumption increases. It is also common to just keep drinking and not even be aware. Like when a server keeps refilling your wine glass while you are in deep conversation. You don’t even really notice and probably just go with it, but that usually doesn’t end well.

🤍 Eat what you like. Sounds basic but really isn’t. You don’t have to eat foods you don’t really like just because it is on the holiday buffet. Eat what you truly enjoy and find satisfying.

I think of my clients a lot and as a practitioner I know that I am one part of their journey and I won’t be working with them forever. My clients share their struggles with food and eating, I get to know them on a deep level and my role is to help support them and find a way out of the food and eating prison. Everyone should know that food struggles do not have to be permanent and there can be a day that it is not an issue for you.

I hope you are having a great Memorial Day weekend! In addition to honoring the fallen soldiers and the unofficial start of summer, look to honor your body. Some steps to honor your body:
1) Eat adequately and consistently. 2) Eat all foods and avoid eating plans that have you measure or eliminate a particular food group.
3) Find ways that make moving your body enjoyable and addicting.

Happy RD Day! Celebrating with this awesome cookie dough cupcake from and reflections on a career I love!

Reflection #1: One favorite part of being a non-diet dietitian is that I help people eat cupcakes (or other food they label as “bad”) in a neutral, satisfying way! I help people eat all foods while honoring their body. This means sometimes eating a cupcake and sometimes eating a carrot. This means not feeling like a failure for eating a cupcake instead of something like a fruit or a vegetable.

Reflection #2: I also love helping people find joy in eating again. Many of my clients have been on and off diets or go through cycles of restricting and bingeing so often that they feel completely out of control around food. I help them feel “normal” with food again.

Reflection #3: I LOVE helping families end the dieting and body hating legacy. Let’s continue to help the next generation focus on changing the world, not their bodies. When people are thinking about food all the time, it takes a way precious brain space for other more meaningful ventures.

Reflection #4: I love when girls text me to tell me they got their period! Losing your period is not healthy and even if someone is a runner or competitive athlete, it is important to rebuild the body’s nutrition stores to have a normal menstrual cycle.

Reflection #5: I love that my clients feel comfortable talking to me about things that they have never told anyone when it comes to food/body/eating. I hold what they say close to my heart and hope to be a strong support on their journey.

Reflection #6: I love the connections I have with other RDs in this space and am so thankful to call them both friends and colleagues. .rd

As you think about how the next week is going to go, keep this handy as a reminder. Compassion and curiosity is the way to look at your behaviors, not criticism.

A lot of my clients get mad at themselves for eating a certain way or for not exercising. They beat themselves up and may say something like “you have prediabetes why do you keep eating X” x = fill in the blank. OR “if you don’t start exercising, X is going to happen.”

You cannot hate yourself to a positive change. So the next time you are unhappy with something that you did or didn’t do, try to step back and look at the situation with compassion and curiosity.

Repeat after me “I do not need to eat perfectly for heart health.” (Or for anything actually!) Perhaps you can have some self talk or a mantra affirming situation this week reminding yourself that your eating never needs to be perfect. Also, what is perfect eating any way? There is no perfect eating but people tend to strive for perfection and this never ends well.

Here are some examples of what happens when people strive for eating perfection.

1) I only like veggies with ranch so I don’t eat them.

2) I ate a donut for breakfast instead of oatmeal so I blew it and will try again tomorrow.

3) I ate past fullness at lunch so I am just going to disconnect from eating the rest of the day and start again tomorrow.

My clients often recognize their all or nothing thinking with eating is steeped in perfectionism. We are taught from a young age that eating should be “perfect”. That is diet culture, that is nutrition education in our school system, that is not true!

This week, ask yourself, “do I strive to be perfect with eating?” And if so “how does this impact me?”

Let me take you to a better place! You don’t have to stress about food and eating.
