"I don't know how you do that."
"I could never."
"Your pain tolerance is so much higher than mine."
"You're so strong."
"You're so brave."
"You must have crazy willpower."
"I never could have done it without drugs."
STOP. Sit with me a minute.
My pain tolerance is average. On a scale from 1 to 10, my willpower is at 'ate chocolate cake for lunch'. The last time I 'ran' a mile, I couldn't even jog the whole thing.
I'm not remarkable. I'm equipped.
I see you, mamas. Mamas who went through trauma, terror, tension and pain. Mamas who endured forceps, episiotomies, pitocin, c-sections. Mamas with failed inductions. Mamas who have cried in the middle of the night over the bruises on your precious baby's head. Mamas who gave their all, and somehow still came out bruised.
Mamas who hear stories of beautiful, peaceful, 'natural' births, and maybe feel like they're a little bit less of a mama. A little bit less of a warrior. A little bit more of a failure.
I see you.
My births were beautiful not because I'm stronger than you, but because I was prepared. I was supported. I was peaceful.
If anything, you're the strong ones. You've been through so much. If I had been faced with the trauma you've seen, I would be scared, too.
Mamas, I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be that way. Our bodies were made for this. Birth-- medicated or unmedicated, va**nal or surgical, hospital or home-- can be a beautiful, empowering experience for every parent. It should be. Emergencies should be just that-- emergencies. Few and far between. We shouldn't be left wondering why, if a healthy baby is the goal, we still feel so broken.
Birth should be as unique and varied as the people who experience it-- and just as beautiful, too.
We are warriors, every one of us. We hold the power of the very Earth in our bodies when we birth our children. Feeling that power shouldn't be unique, it should be universal. It shouldn't be something special for the 'elite'... It should be normal.
The experience of bringing our babies to earth should be as precious as they are.
All we need is the knowledge and support to make it that way.
