Snow day self-care, courtesy of our own team. During last weekend’s winter storm, many staff across Luminis Health went above and beyond to ensure patients continued to receive safe, uninterrupted care.

One of those team members was Summer Timbascio, a nurse on our postpartum care unit who is training to become a certified Pilates instructor. Summer graciously led colleagues in a Pilates session, offering a moment to recharge while continuing to care for our community.

Our care teams have treated serious sledding injuries this week, and we want to help keep our community safe.

Dr. Lauren Fitzpatrick, Medical Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department, recently spoke with Fox 5 DC to share important winter safety tips, including wearing helmets and sledding feet first to reduce the risk of head and neck injuries, and taking regular warming breaks to help prevent frostbite and hypothermia, especially for kids.

It’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that cervical cancer screenings matter.

Most people should begin cervical cancer screening at age 21. From there, recommendations vary by age and health history, but staying on schedule helps detect changes early, when treatment is most effective.

Take a moment to check in on your screening schedule and talk with your provider about what’s recommended for you: https://bit.ly/3Z59JJu

With freezing temperatures, snow, and ice impacting our area, our Emergency Department often sees an increase in frostbite and sledding-related injuries in children.

Dr. Lauren Fitzpatrick, Medical Director, Pediatrics at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center, reminds families to take extra precautions during winter weather, from bundling up properly to choosing safe places to sled and supervising outdoor play.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping kids stay safe while enjoying the snow.

As the snow continues to fall, our teams are hard at work keeping our campuses safe and accessible.

As a reminder, Luminis Health remains open 24/7.

A big thank you to our staff who are on-site, shoveling, clearing paths, and making sure patients, visitors, and colleagues can move safely across our campuses.

With winter weather impacting our area, it’s important to take extra care if you’re shoveling snow.

While it may feel like a routine winter chore, shoveling can put significant strain on your heart and body, especially in cold temperatures. Cold weather can tighten blood vessels, and the sudden physical exertion of shoveling can raise heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of a heart attack.

People at higher risk include those with heart disease or a prior heart attack, smokers, people who are overweight, and anyone who doesn’t exercise regularly. As you navigate the storm, take it slow, ask for help when needed, and put your safety first.
