Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI) is often misunderstood or not diagnosed. Children with neurological problems may have CVI. This occurs when the area of the brain that processes visual information coming in from the eyes is not working properly. The child’s eyes can be completely NORMAL and still be unable to see because the images are not forming clearly in the brain. Why is this important for physical therapy? Vision often drives motor development. When a child cannot make sense of their surroundings, it can be scary to move and the child can’t see interesting things that motivate them to explore.
