Deep in the basement of the founding church of New Haven lies the graves of about 135 settlers dating as far back as 1637.

Keeping the gravestones from this period in good condition requires a range of efforts, including protection and conservation.

Some sites are cleaning the gravestones exposed to the elements or securing grants to restore them, while others, like the ones at Center Church, are kept underground.
