February is Black History Monthâa time to honor the achievements, contributions and lasting impact of Black individuals and communities, while also acknowledging the history and experiences that shape today.
Today, we highlight St. Louis-native Dr. Bobby Westbrooks, founder of the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) and the Student American Black Chiropractic Association (SABCA). Dr. Westbrooks was a student at Missouri Chiropractic College when it merged with Logan Basic College in the mid-1960s, becoming Logan College of Chiropractic.
Dr. Westbrooks graduated in 1967 and soon got involved in local politics. He recognized that many African Americans were unfamiliar with the benefits of chiropractic care and found that Black communities were often underserved by both access to care and opportunities within the profession.
Determined to change that, Dr. Westbrooks founded the ABCA and SABCA organizations to provide advocacy, support and community education. Dr. Westbrooks was the first President of ABCA, serving from 1981 to 1984, and he wouldnât be the last Logan alumni to hold that position. It would later be filled by Rodney Williams, DC (â00) from 2008 to 2012, and more recently by Micheala Edwards, DC (â09) from 2020 to 2022.
Check back here throughout the month of February for more highlights and stories for Black History Month.
The bust pictured was unveiled in 2018 during the 37th Annual ABCA National Convention and dedicated in Dr. Westbrooksâ honor. It is housed in the Purser Center on Logan Universityâs campus.
