11:30am - 12:00pm
1:30pm - 2:00pm
2:30pm - 3:00pm
In the late 19th century, people from around the world arrived in the Mount Diablo Coal Field in search of a new life and new opportunities. Discover the stories of miners who toiled underground as you experience a replica coal mine. We’ll discuss the dangers of working deep in the layers of the Earth and explore the area’s fascinating geology.
All participants must be age 7 or older, and parent participation is required. Hard hats are required and provided. Underground spaces may feel claustrophobic for some people.
Please bring a jacket; you will be underground in the mine, where temperatures are in the mid-50's year-round.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early, to allow enough time for parking and walking to the Greathouse Visitor Center, located ¼ mile from the parking lot. The walk from the parking lot includes some steep and uneven terrain.
Park in the upper parking lot, 1 mile past the kiosk. Once parked, continue up the hill, following signs to the Greathouse Visitor Center.
Each tour is limited to 15 total maximum participants.
Cost is $3 per person.
$5 per vehicle parking fee applies when kiosk is attended.
Registration Required.
