How can you help a two-and-a-half-year-old with autism become aware of a dirty diaper? Dr. Peter Beddow explains that sensory under-sensitivity can dull body cues, making it harder for some kids to recognize the need to use the potty. The key is building awareness through consistent, repeated routines.

The practical plan: catch the child right as they are pooping—within five seconds if you can when you see the bearing-down look. Keep the experience positive and non-punitive. Prompt the potty sign, and use the same short phrases each time so the child links the feeling, the action, and the diaper change routine. It takes diligence, supervision, and some luck. Bonus tip: playing David Bowie's "Changes" during diaper changes can help create a positive atmosphere.

Dr. Peter Beddow walks through how he reads Goodnight Moon with a young child, using finger-tracking, clear labeling, and gentle repetition to build language and attention.

He models pointing and naming, playful sounds like moo and hush, counting bears and chairs in order, watching the analog clock move toward bedtime, spotting the mouse and moon on each page, and singing a steady ending. One book, read many times, can open rich moments for learning without pressure.

When I was a new teacher in a special education classroom, a supervisor told me that some kids never learn how to read. That challenging statement sparked my passion: to teach every student to read. In this video, I reflect on the importance of persistence in reading instruction and honor the fact that kids with autism learn differently but can learn. Most kids can read, it just may take time and the right approach. Watch the full reflection and learn why I don’t give up on teaching kids to read.

Dr. Peter Beddow clarifies a common misconception: giving a student something they want after completing their work is not a bribe. In fact, a bribe involves paying someone to do something they should not do, like avoiding consequences illegally. Rewards, on the other hand, are normal life contingencies—similar to earning a paycheck: when you fulfill your responsibilities, you receive what was promised. Learn more about the difference between rewards and bribes and how to approach classroom management with clear understanding from Accessible Hope, LLC.
