“House calls” from doctors is surging in the United States, and instead of ringing the doorbell, your doctor is pinging your smartphone. Telemedicine, or receiving one’s medical care remotely is surging.

One survey of 800 patients at Penn Medicine reported that 67% of respondents considered their video or telephone visit “as good or better” than a standard in-person visit.

If you have a medical concern and would like to try a telehealth video chat with a medical provider, check the link in the first comment.

Common causes of a Baker’s cyst include a knee injury, torn cartilage, infection, or arthritis. To treat a Baker’s cyst at home rest the leg, use cold pack, and take an anti-inflammatory medicine like an Ibuprofen.

If your Baker's cyst isn’t going away or is causing you a lot of pain and discomfort, see your medical provider, or if we can help, call 480-444-1160.

New Medical Article: 13 Strategies to Slow Down Aging

Aging happens, but one of the best kept secrets is that how we age is not completely out of our control.

While your chronological age reflects the number of birthdays you’ve celebrated, your biological age is so much more important.

Your biological age will tell you how well your cells, your organs, and your systems are functioning and those are numbers that you can influence by your daily habits, your environment, your stress levels, and medical care.

“The biology that drives the aging process is being demystified right in front of our eyes to the point that it’s conceivable to think about slowing the pace of aging, turning the clock back and altering the course of someone’s lifespan.” -Frank J. Palella, MD

Research continues to show that healthy lifestyle strategies can support cellular health, protect DNA, and promote longevity.

If you’ve been on the search for ways to slow down aging naturally, improve your energy, maintain cognitive function, and protect your long-term health, we suggest you begin here.

It’s been a while since talked about treatments for Pilonidal cysts, so now’s a good time for a quick review.

A Pilonidal cyst is a small pocket that forms under the skin near the tailbone. It often contains hair, skin debris, and fluid, and it can easily become irritated or infected.

According to the American Society of Colon and Re**al Surgeons, pilonidal disease affects more than 70,000 people in the U.S. each year, most often in young adults and people who spend long periods sitting.

The right treatment depends on whether the cyst is irritated, infected, or recurring:
Mild cases: Warm compresses, good hygiene, and over-the-counter pain relievers may help if the cyst isn’t infected.

Infected cysts: Most often treated with an incision and drainage procedure. At urgent care, your provider will gently numb the area, make a small opening, and drain the infection. This quick procedure provides relief and helps the healing process. Antibiotics may also be prescribed.

Chronic or recurring cysts: In some cases, referral for surgery to fully remove the cyst and surrounding tissue may be necessary to prevent it from coming back.

Q: How do antibiotics work?

A: Antibiotics are like mini warriors that conquer bacteria in your body. Here's how they work:

Breakthrough: Bacteria have a protective wall that an antibiotic like penicillin and cephalosporin can smash through causing that bacteria wall to burst.

Protein Disruptor: Bacteria require proteins to grow. Antibiotics like Tetracyclines disrupt the production of proteins.

DNA/RNA Blockers: There are some antibiotics, like fluoroquinolones that can target the genetic material of bacteria. That way the bacteria can't replicate or survive without their genetic handbook.

Metabolic Blockers: Bacteria need specific pathways of energy to thrive.

Sulfonamides create roadblocks by cutting off the energy supply.

Antibiotics are still needed to take care of infections that the human body cannot take care of on its own.

If you have an infection like strep throat, bacterial pneumonia, or a UTI seek help now at Heavens Urgent Care. Walk-ins are always welcome!
