Holidays can be hard for so many! It's important to tune in to your own needs. Remember, you are the expert of your own body and that means honoring what your needs are even if that means setting boundaries with well intended family and friends.

I’ve been around the block and have seen the latest trends and patterns in food and nutrition world since the 1990s. And guess what? The common denominator with all trends and diets is they moralize food. Food is not a moral issue- it’s not good or bad. It just is.

It's Self-care Wednesday! This one is for all those that are "too busy" to eat or forget to eat.

We often hear the term "self-care" and assume it has something to do with taking a hot bath, taking time out for oneself, or getting a massage. But it can be as simple as fueling your body.

Today, give yourself permission to slow down and nourish your body and mind. Your body will thank you!

A little bit of Nutrition Science facts...

Carbohydrates, Protein, and Fat are all macronutrients which provides energy (kcals) for your body. It is the combination of all 3 that is needed to fuel and sustain the human body.

This is often a hard concept and topic for ED recovery and disordered eating because diet trends are ever changing. Currently, the war is on Carbohydrates. But, if you apply some nutrition science (which goes all the way back to the cellular level), then it's proof carbohydrates are needed!

If you find that you gain weight when adding back carbohydrates, have you considered that it may be necessary for your bodies survival?

Get ready for a few Halloween posts from yours truly today!

Why today?

Because parents everywhere are probably getting anxious with all the candy that's about to come into homes. And that's ok! Let it be. Embrace the sugar! The more you try to restrict, interfere, or comment, the more the child wants it. And to be honest, the more you are promoting that something is wrong with wanting candy, the more shame you’ll create tonight and for years to come.

Today's posts will help guide you through some tips and strategies in preparation for tonight and the next few days!

Everyone’s lives are crazy and busy… I know mine is! But it’s important to stop and ask what your body needs from you. This is important from a nourishing perspective- nourishing your mind and also your body
What does your body need, want, crave? It’s is compassion and kindness? Is it some sort of movement? The sky is the limit here.

Are you stuck in the diet-binge cycle? Dieting is not the answer but it's understandable why we gravitate towards them. We live in a culture that has normalized disordered eating patterns and has put much emphasis on image.

It's not YOU that's the problem, it's the DIET.

When we restrict our bodies of nutrients and calories, our bodies learn not to trust us and will do anything it needs to do survive (aka you won't lose weight or change your body as you intended). Our bodies are smarter than our brains.

Stop dieting and learn to live and enjoy life! Break the perpetual cycle!

In disordered eating and eating disorder recovery we talk a lot about giving yourself the gift of self-permission. Self permission is allowing yourself to be as you want- and not boxing yourself in with rules and expectations
What are some signs, that you notice, that you are pushing yourself too hard and not practicing self-permission?

THE HEALING POWER of ‘WHOLE PERSON’ NOURISHMENT
By Deborah Kesten, VIP Contributor at Thrive Global

THE 4 FACETS OF FOOD. Today, nutritional science is verifying the ‘whole person’ healing power of ancient food wisdom our ancestors discovered over millennia: food has the power to heal physically, but also emotionally, spiritually, and socially. These are the 4 Facets of Food—the foundation of the science-backed Whole Person Integrative Eating® program for overcoming overeating and overweight.

Rather than thinking about the 4 Facets of Food as a new diet or as more dietary dogma, consider that they integrate our current nutrient-oriented view of food while also acknowledging the harder-to-measure healing dimensions of food, such as its link to emotional and spiritual well-being and community.

Once you begin to view food from this multifaceted framework, your entire relationship to food and eating—and your perception about the power of food to heal multi-dimensionally—will change at its core.

It can shift our perception, so we begin to see more possibilities and opportunities.

What’s one simple thing in your life that you are grateful for right now?

If these people were truly concerned for your health, why don’t they discuss what health means and looks like to you? Health does not look like a certain weight and health is so much more than just the physical appearance.

Anyone advising weight loss should take the time to explore with you that things in your life that may influence your health - including mental, emotional, social, financial, environmental and genetic factors.

Perhaps if they did, they would start to realise that losing weight is not as straightforward as the medical world would have you believe. And if they did, they would need to start acknowledging that weight gain is very often the symptom and not the cause of health changes.

We are not anti-weight loss and if a person loses weight as a side-effect of making sustainable and enjoyable behaviour changes, then this can be seen as a positive thing. But equally, if a person makes sustainable and enjoyable behaviour changes that benefit their health but doesn’t lose weight, then this should be seen as a positive thing too, regardless of their size.

If someone suggest you should lose weight, what are they actually asking you to do?

You can’t just make weight loss happen, your body weight is not a behaviour that you can change.

For many, weight gain is a symptom of a change in health and not the cause.

A person can change behaviours and this MAY affect their weight, but weight is so much more complex than what you eat and how much you move.

“Dieting is firmly rooted in American culture, and so is the judgmental attitude toward the self and others that accompanies it. Words like “cheat day” and “guilt-free” imply that eating what your body wants, when it wants it, is something we should feel bad about. " Marie Rago

As soon as we place restrictions on what we’re allowed to eat, our brains start creating compulsions and obsessive thoughts that drive us to “cave.”

This!!!!!!! 🙌 Exact same journey I have been through with my training in school and real life with my patients. I might add this also pertains to my own journey with food and nutrition. The health and wellness field/industry needs a complete re-work of what “health” truly is- hint: it’s viewed from many lenses and it’s multidimensional!

The BMI scale is NOT an accurate indicator of health. You can be healthy with a BMI above 25. You cannot determine the health of a person by how much they weigh.

An important message with all the talk and fear of weight gain during COVID. All this weight/diet talk that is being expressed directly or indirectly on social media is highly problematic for many people - I know this because my clients are telling me.

As a dietitian, I was trained to use the BMI scale as a measure of health. When I started practicing and seeing people’s struggle and shame around body weight, I soon realised that focusing on weight was not helpful for improving health long-term. When I was weighing people, I would end up spending lots of time reassuring people that they were in fact fine and doing well with making changes and that what the scales showed wasn’t important. I would shift the focus to how they felt physically and emotionally and discuss how this was of much more value. I soon stopped weighing people.

For the past ~8 years I have been using a Non-Diet Approach (aka intuitive eating) to help people take care of their bodies and their health. Intuitive eating is about eating in a way that is both nourishing and pleasurable, it is about reconnecting with appetite cues and what satisfies us or leaves us feeling energised both physically and mentally. The approach also encourages moving in ways that feel good. It is about nurturing a healthy relationship with both food and body.

Your healthy body weight is one you can maintain easily when eating intuitively and staying active in ways that feel good; NOT dieting, restricting food, or exercising like mad! And a healthy weight can be > than 25 on the BMI scale.
