Picture it: you go to your audiologist for a hearing test. You may be told that you have a mild hearing loss. Or you may find out that your hearing loss is more severe. This description is referred to as “the degree of hearing loss.” It is based on how loud sounds need to be for you to hear them. Just like snowflakes, no two people with hearing loss are the same! They're unique.

No matter your loss, we have a solution just for you! Call us to day to schedule your appointment! 407-889-5253 or 352-326-5253

This week’s Black History Month feature is Warren “Wawa” Snipe, a deaf rapper, performer and ASL interpreter.

Snipe made history earlier this month as one of the first deaf performers to sign during the Super Bowl Halftime Show! He began his musical career in 1994 after graduating from Gallaudet University and has helped pioneer the “dip hop” movement: a musical genre centered around deaf artists.

This week, our celebration of Black History Month continues with Glenn B. Anderson.

Anderson is the first deaf African American to earn a doctorate degree and serves on the board of the National Black Deaf Advocates. His storied career can hardly be contained in one post, but he has most notably worked as a rehabilitation counselor, professor and Director of Training at the University of Arkansas Rehabilitation Research Center.

Anderson was appointed by President George W. Bush as a member of the National Council of Disability from 2002-2005. He’s written a number of professional journals and published the book “Still I Rise: The Enduring Legacy of Black Deaf Arkansans Before and After Integration."

🇺🇸 Happy Presidents Day! We salute all the U.S. Presidents today, but we pay special homage to those who have helped to improve hearing healthcare awareness.

History records reveal that several presidents experienced hearing impairment of some degree (and used hearing devices!) going all the way back to the original Founding Fathers. It's reported that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson utilized ear horns/ear trumpets (made from animal horns) in their later years.

Electronic hearing aids have been around since the late 19th century, but it wasn’t until long after our 31st president, Herbert Hoover left office in 1933 that a president first used a hearing instrument. By then, transistor hearing aids had become common. Hoover used his device to great effect, turning it off when he did not wish to listen to particular speeches and encouraged Americans to get their hearing checked.

Ronald Reagan was the first president to be publicly fit with hearing aids while serving office. President Reagan further increased awareness on hearing health in 1986 by declaring the month of May to be “Better Hearing and Speech Month,” which still stands today. President Reagan also utilized a hearing aid remote to change the volume of his aids!

Bill Clinton was the second president to be fit with hearing aids while serving. He was 51 years old at the time and suffered from noise-induced-hearing loss (saxophone/band practice). President Clinton utilizes in-the-canal style devices.

Other presidents who wore hearing aids after their presidencies include Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush (who famously signed the Americans with Disabilities Act a significant piece of legislation that helped prevent workplace discrimination for those with hearing loss and other disabilities).

In celebration of , we’re highlighting the accomplishments of black hearing healthcare professionals and their impact on the hearing industry.

Andrew Foster was a missionary to the deaf in Ghana, Rwanda and other countries in Africa. He became the first deaf African American to earn a bachelor’s degree from Gallaudet University, as well as a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

Foster was a pioneer of deaf education in Africa and established 32 schools across 13 African countries throughout his career. Since his passing in 1987, the Christian Mission for the Deaf has continued to carry out his vision of creating more schools for the deaf in Africa.
