Days like today remind me that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be 🥰 Surrounded by aspiring midwives as I share the incredible knowledge & skills I have gained over the years, being vulnerable so others may learn & grow! My babies getting to witness the work their mother does for the Lord, praying that they will be inspired one day by the way I balance midwifery & motherhood ❤️

20 week Anatomy Scan 🌿

In midwifery care we typically do not recommend having multiple ultrasounds in pregnancy due to the heat of ultrasonic waves not being fully understood about the effects it can have on baby & excessive scanning can lead to false positives, misinterpretation of results, or unnecessary stress for parents…

I typically only do them for dating if we were unsure of the estimated due date, check viability if we couldn’t pick up heartbeat with doppler, 20 week diagnostic scan, clarify a suspected malpositioned baby & to assess fluid levels when going post dates!

Generally the only one ever usually being done is the 20 week anatomy scan… And yes I will 100% respect my clients autonomy if they choose to opt out of all ultrasounds but I do recommend the 20 week anatomy scan just to help give more clarity on the development of the baby & placenta placement to help give more reassurance in a smooth delivery at home 🙌🏻

P.S. My baby boy is growing right on track & all looks great with him & my placenta ☺️

I am a support person to so many women throughout their pregnancy/birthing journeys 🌻 Sometimes the journey is smooth & simple and other times it’s rocky and uncertain.. No matter what my clients face I will be there to guide them through so they never feel alone, be their biggest advocate of encouragement, provide them peace where there is uncertainty, celebrate the happy moments with them & hold them through the tears of the sad moments.. Each one holding a very special place in my midwife heart 🩷

“False” labor or Prodromal labor happens 😓 Now I don’t like the word “False” as I do believe all contractions are essential in prepping the uterus for all stages of labor but I sympathize with how frustrating & confusing this can be… Contractions are consistent, feeling intense, everything is seeming to be headed in the right direction but then after a while things simmer down, space out & slowly fade.. Midwives eventually head home while mom gets rest!

WHY???

Maybe baby was trying to get into a better position, maybe from stimulation to try to go into labor, maybe infection, maybe dehydration, maybe emotional/physical stress, maybe hormones, maybe irritable uterus… So many possibilities & we may never know the reason why 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s best to ensure mom & baby are healthy then encourage nourishment & rest ✨ And maybe cuddle some baby chicks while you’re there haha

E L E C T R O Y L Y T E S ✨

Now I do my best to practice what I preach as a midwife but I do fall short at times as well… I do know that if we keep our growing bodies properly hydrated with electrolytes so many of our symptoms would fade away ☺️

Electrolytes (specifically sodium, potassium, and magnesium) are essential during pregnancy to manage increased fluid volume, support fetal development, reduce morning sickness, improve sleep, increase energy, prevent cramps, etc. If all you drink is water, it’ll flush you well by having you p*e throughout the day a lot but without electrolytes your body isn’t retaining any of that fluid to help hydrate your organs!

Now let’s talk about SALT.. You don’t want to be getting your sodium intake from highly processed table salt or highly processed/packaged food. You will want to focus on consuming natural, unrefined salts such as Celtic salt. Research the salt you’d prefer 🙌🏻

I personally recommend making your own electrolyte drink, this is how I make mine:
-3/4 glass of coconut water
-1/4 glass orange juice
-A splash of raw cranberry juice
-tsp of healthy Salt (I’m using Baja Gold right now)
- couple shakes of cream of tartar for potassium

GALLBLADDER ATTACKS go together quite well with a warm epsom salt bath, apple cider vinegar shots & Christian Hypnobirthing 😓

Why do gallbladder attacks happen more commonly in pregnancy? The answer… HORMONES!! 😒

Estrogen increases the saturation of cholesterol in bile, making it more likely to form crystals and sludge.

Progesterone acts as a muscle relaxant, causing the gallbladder to contract less frequently and empty more slowly. This reduced motility leads to “biliary stasis,” where bile sits too long and hardens.

📖 My gallbladder has been struggling this pregnancy & I’d much rather go through labor than experience the pain this little organ can cause.. The best way I can describe it is feeling the peak of a contraction constantly with no breaks for however long the attack will last, not in your lower abdomen but instead underneath your rib cage… I moan, I sway, I cry, I scream & will throw up a lot of the times 😢

Steps you can take to avoid/aid this pregnancy symptom would be:
- Maintain a whole food diet (avoid greasy, high fat foods)
- Take apple cider regularly, epically during an attack to hep dissolve the stones
- Apply heat to spasmed area
- Take magnesium to help relax the muscles (Epsom salt bath helps calm body during attack)
- Exercise daily to help digestion
- Stay hydrated
- Find ways to stay calm until it passes like meditative music, dim lighting, supportive family just like you need in birth

✨ Initial Prenatal Appt ✨

Midwives typically start care around 10 weeks of pregnancy, unless of course concerns prompt sooner assessment… The initial appt consists of:
- Reviewing medical/pregnancy history
- Going through current health/lifestyle/eating habits
- Discussing proper supplementation
- Running initial bloodwork, urinalysis & STD testing
- Genetic bloodwork with informed consent
- Listening to baby’s heart tones via Doppler
- Assessing maternal vitals
- Ultrasound for dating if unsure on estimated due date

Midwives take their time with you, really getting to know you & your family. Guiding each mom properly for what she may need or what may be best for her & her baby while respecting her decisions for her own health care 🌿

Yes I midwife myself through my students or aspiring student (aka little sister) lol Always weird when I’m sitting on the other side of the office as the client instead of the midwife haha

10 weeks ✨

I plan to share my whole midwifery journey with you all this time around ☺️ Giving you a glimpse of the amazing work us midwives do! Midwifery is a more intimate, individualized kind of prenatal care… Spent with more time educating woman & giving them true informed consent… Building an actual relationship with your provider making you feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout your childbearing journey ❤️
I get asked a lot if I just birth on my own without any help & the answer is definitely not!! I rely on my midwifery colleagues throughout my whole pregnancy journey because it’s great to get other midwives points of view & I 100% go into “labor land” during my births so I need the support of my midwife team!!
