For 30 years, the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has been protecting our lakes and streams, securing critical wildlife habitat, and providing world-class recreational opportunities. Let’s keep it that way.

Congratulations to Baileys Harbor on achieving Bird City status in the Bird City Wisconsin program! This recognition highlights the community's ongoing commitment to protecting birds and the habitats they rely on, as well as educating residents about the importance of bird conservation.

The Ridges Sanctuary is proud to play a key role in this achievement. We help preserve over 1,700 acres of one of Wisconsin’s most biologically diverse ecosystems—habitat that supports more than 60 species of breeding birds. Our efforts include public education initiatives like the Festival of Nature, along with bird monitoring programs such as the Christmas Bird Count, Bald Eagle Nest Watch, and Sandhill Crane Counts.

Bird City Wisconsin was created in 2009 and began recognizing communities the following year. The program recognizes municipalities for the conservation and education activities that they undertake to make their communities healthy for birds… and people. Bird City Wisconsin is the first Bird City program and served as the model for the Western Hemisphere-wide Bird City Network, of which Bird City Wisconsin is a founding member.

Last week, several TNC staff and trustees headed to the Wisconsin State Capitol to raise our voices in support of protecting our state's natural places through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program.

We were proud to show up with new polling data in hand that shows the vast majority (93%!) of Wisconsinites--across the political and geographic spectrum--also support this vital program.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and showed out, and to Governor Tony Evers for his proposal to fully fund the program for another 10 years. We need public funding for conservation now more than ever!

Thanks also to Representative Tony Kurtz and State Representative Deb Andraca, who joined Gov. Evers to speak at the kickoff of the days' events.
