Hi moms, Laurie with Lice Centers here. We’re just days into the school year and moms are already talking head lice. Remember, your school doesn’t have head lice, KIDS have head lice, and they go to school WITH head lice. Here’s some information that will hopefully help you prevent head lice and treat it if your children ever get it.

Do you know what that little brown “bead” glued to the strand of hair is? It’s a human head lice egg. Head lice eggs aren’t white, they’re brown. (The white looking eggs are empty casings). In order for the bug inside of an egg to survive, the egg has to be cemented to the hair shaft no more than a quarter inch away from the root of the hair, where the heat and humidity that radiate off of the scalp can keep the egg alive.

Lice eggs, get glued to the hair shaft no more than 1/4 inch away from the root of the hair. You can buzz cut the hair and still have eggs and lice in the short hair that remains.
