New research on articulation development!!! Y’all, this is so exciting- McLeod & Crowe (2018) published their results and personally, I feel like this is great info!

What does this mean? The AVERAGE child will master each sound by the age noted- which also means that even if they are a little bit older and still haven’t mastered the sound, it’s ok. But I do think this is great info for parents & SLPs to have because we know the sooner the better (and usually quicker and easier too!) when we look at articulation intervention!

SPEECH VS LANGUAGE. National Speech-Language Hearing Month seems like a good time to share this again.

How many times have you explained these two terms!? Do you find yourself breaking down the difference between speech and language?

36 exposures! Did you realize the number was that high? I came across this when looking into evidence for reading the same book over and over (and over) again. 📚

Help children see other people’s perspective!

Talking about how others think and feel helps children understand and appreciate different viewpoints, develop empathy, and relate to others.

Did you know lack of background knowledge can make a deficit skill look worse than it really is? Is it fair, no. Can we help, yes!💡⁣

Lack of background knowledge can be due to many different circumstances but you can easily incorporate experiences, reading, and listening task into your sessions to help build up the information for your students to recall.⁣

Visuals for vocabulary is one of the best places to start but we know how hard it is to find a picture for what we need. One of my newest and honestly most favorite ways to get what I need is to use AI ( artificial intelligence) 🧠 💻⁣

🧠 There are two ways to process language:

Analytic language processing!

And

Gestalt language processing!

🗣 If your child uses delayed echolalia to communicate (repeating words/phrases from TV shows, YouTube, and other people), they are like a gestalt language processor!

🚨 Many autistic students are gestalt language processors!

🫶🏼 This is a totally awesome and valid way to communicate! But oftentimes we may notice that our kids are “stuck” in it, and can’t seem to communicate all that they really want to be communicating. This is where a speech therapist trained to use the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) strategies can help!
