I think it can feel easy to give up or to not even start. That the task at hand, the numerous "asks of us," feel too big. But there are things that will always be of great worth to our journey, and they are often the hard things.

Motivation doesn’t usually arrive before you begin; it awakens instead, as you move. Momentum is born in *motion*.

Often, what comes first is resistance. Like a gatekeeper, resistance meets us each time we approach something that could change our lives or bring us closer to our own destiny. For reasons old as time, the dragon always guards the treasure.

That feeling of not wanting to do it - the heaviness before the walk, the dread before the task, the sense of deep resistance before change - doesn't mean it isn’t worth doing. It's usually the surest sign it is.

Because once you begin - several minutes into the walk, a page or two into the writing, an hour into the put-off work - something inevitably shifts. Energy stirs. The very act of beginning summons life and you'll find it step up and meet you. Motivation so often doesn't precede the doing but grows inside it. Like flames taking off in a blaze, from a slowly built fire.

The dragon at the threshold usually doesn't devour us overtly. It mostly just whispers (softly and too convincingly): “Give up. It's too hard. Do something else. There’s no point anyway.”

But if you take even one small step forward, you’ll find it shift. And as you keep going what was waiting all along, that is, your own power, and that beautifully remembered Path.... rising up again to meet you.
