Purslane (Portulacca oleracea), a semisucculent w**d that appears this time of year, when soil temps reach 86 degrees F, and the seeds are picked up by the sprinkler runoff and deposited in places in the field where the runoff puddles a bit. That's where it really likes to grow, this plant, and make a monotypic carpet if it can. I've always been impressed by its ability to do that, and also by the fact that the plant contains more alpha-linolenic acid than any other terrestrial w**d/medicinal herb/food. They say the distribution is Eurasian, but if you check the archaeological records, the seeds turn up in precolumbian sites, which means its native american as well. There is plenty about this plant that is worthy of more attention. As a food, really unparalleled. Nutritionally just simply loaded--significantly higher than spinach in the whole array of vitamins, protein, essential fatty acids, etc. and lower in calcium oxalate. I take a chew of this herb when I'm in the middle of the field and the sun is beating me down, and it brings me. . . up.
