Yesterday was World Teen Mental Wellness Day, according to WHO, one in seven 10-19 year olds report experiencing a mental health disorder worldwide. In 2023, the US Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 50% of adolescents experience a mental disorder, demonstrating the clear need for continued support of the teen population when it comes to their mental health.

Here are a few ways that you can support your teen in navigating their mental health:
1. Encourage physical self-care
2. Foster mental and emotional self care
3. Talk openly about mental health
4. Be willing to be vulnerable yourself and lead by example
5. Teach healthy boundaries
6. Discuss importance of mindful social media usage
7. Connect to professionals when needed
8. Validate your teen’s emotions when they share
9. Give appropriate amounts of independence
10. Work through conflict together

As we come to the close of Black History Month, we would be remiss if we did not take the space for a reflective discussion on how the field of psychology and therapy have not historically been an inclusive and supportive space for the BIPOC community. We continue to strive to close the accessibility gap for Black Mental Health and these are a few ways to accomplish that goal.
