This week is National Veterinary Technician Week! We will be highlighting one of our amazing techs each day starting with CHRISTA ⭐️
••••
Christa has been a veterinary assistant with OforA for over five years and is the positive energy we all rely on to keep us upbeat and on task. She goes above and beyond for our patients and clients, using special handling techniques to keep patients calm and comforted. For our staff, she is invaluable and no matter how busy the day, you will always find her with a smile on her face (and often a song or two to share). Thank you Christa for all you do for our OforA family!
••••
When not at work, Christa can be found adventuring outdoors with her two teenagers and fiancé. She is also mama to two corgis and cat. She is currently having fun planning her upcoming wedding (yay!).

Our ophthalmologists and support staff utilize many specialized tools and tests to make sure we have the most accurate information about animal eyes. One of those critical tools is called a Tonometer. This invaluable tool measures the intraocular pressure of an eye, also called tonometry. OforA uses tonometers on a variety of animal species. The information collected by tonometry aids in the treatment and care of all of our patients, big and small, spiky and fluffy, and all relying on us for help with their eyes! 👀

Before swiping or scrolling, take a guess! What is our veterinary assistant Angelica holding?
••••
It’s not a marble or a water bead - this is a lens! This lens was removed recently during an Intracapsular Lens Extraction (ICLE) surgery performed on one of our cute dog patients with an anterior lens luxation.
••••
In a normally functioning canine eye, the lens is located just behind the pupil and iris. The lens is critical for focusing light on to the retina for vision. An anterior lens lunation is a condition where this lens has shifted forward into the front part of the eye. If left untreated, this can lead to glaucoma, pain, and vision loss. The goal of an ICLE is to remove the misplaced lens, improve comfort, and prevent further complications. Pets without lenses are visual but will be farsighted, meaning that up close objects may appear blurry but distant objects are clear.
••••
Lens luxation can cause a variety of symptoms including a visibly displaced lens, redness in the whites of the eye, cloudiness, vision changes (bumping into objects and having trouble navigating), pupil abnormalities, excessive tearing, and lethargy. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, an ophthalmic examination is recommended to rule out lens issues as well as other eye health conditions.

Noticing a mass on or around your dog’s eyelid? Meibomian gland tumors are predominately benign tumors that can enlarge and cause irritation to the surface of the eye. They can also house bacteria and disrupt the tear film contributing to ocular surface disease.
••••
The good news! If caught early, these tumors are often amenable to excision under sedation which allows for a less costly procedure, faster recovery time, and provides a safer alternative to general anesthesia. This procedure is performed often in our clinic and can help prevent future complications.
••••
The photos above show Mack, an adorable 8 year old Labradoodle who had both upper lid and lower lid meibomian glad tumors removed under sedation.
