Meet Karen Knudsen, Director of Emergency Services at USC Arcadia Hospital

Hello and Happy Holidays. I would like to take an opportunity to introduce myself to the members of Club 300 and the generous donors. My name is Karen Knudsen, and I am very excited to join USC Arcadia as the Director of Emergency Services. I have almost 30 years of nursing and leadership experience, specializing in Emergency care. I started here in early November and have been so impressed by the dedication and commitment of our staff to care for the community.
We recently completed two successful recertifications of specialty care with the Los Angeles County EMS agency, EDAP (Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics) and STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction). This demonstrates our department’s promise to deliver quality care to the youngest members of our community as well as those with life-threatening cardiac conditions.
As we head into 2023, we will continue to collaborate with our physicians and other hospital staff to continue to provide comprehensive and excellent emergency services.
On behalf of our physicians, staff and patients we treat, I would like to thank you for your support of the Hollfelder Emergency Care Center. Together, we respectfully ask you consider making your year-end tax-deductible gift to USC Arcadia Hospital, a contribution that will go directly to supporting the health and wellness of our community. Please visit www.uscarcadiahospital.org/donate to make your gift or call USC Arcadia Hospital Foundation at 626-898-8888.
Thank you in advance for your generous support, I look forward to meeting Club 300 members.

The Hollfelder Emergency Care Center at USC Arcadia Hospital -

One of the most renowned features of USC Arcadia Hospital is our state-of-the-art, full-service emergency department. This is staffed around the clock and features 26 private rooms, advanced technology, equipped for virtually any situation.
Fast Acting Team, Newest Technologies
Every minute counts in an emergency, our staff knows this and has been trained in emergency procedures so that they can make fast decisions and quickly provide patients with the services they need. A fast-acting team means very little, however, if the technical equipment can't keep up with them. A critical medical situation cannot wait, so we have installed state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment in the emergency department where imaging studies can be processed quickly, and treatment administered faster.
The Hollfellder Emergency Care Center received a Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification from independent rating agency DNV GL and is designated by Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services (LAC/EMS) as one of 18 comprehensive stroke centers serving the region. It is also designated by LAC/EMS as a dedicated heart attack, or STEMI, receiving center for diagnosing and quickly treating heart attack patients. Our highly qualified Chest Pain Team is available 24 hours a day to evaluate and relieve chest pain quickly.

Grazie to all who attended Club 300's Cooking Class fundraiser at Saute Culinary Academy on March 30th. Guests made an assortment of delizioso Italian dishes including fresh pasta, tasty sauces, meatballs, chicken piccata, chocolate souffle and more, from scratch of course! Then it was time to enjoy a scrumptious Italian feast, buon appetito! While improving culinary skills, everyone in attendance also contributed to emergency services at Methodist Hospital by supporting this fundraiser, bravi tutti . Special thanks to event co-chiars and Club 300 Committee Members, Kris Lakin and Julie Maldonado Flores for not only helping sell-out this event but make sure we had a successful fundraiser. Hospitalizations are indeed soaring again. There are ~6,000 COVID-positive patients in hospital beds across California today, and that number is projected by the CA Department of Health and Human Services to grow as high as 25,000 in just the next 4-5 weeks.

As Dr. Fauci stated, "It's a false narrative to take comfort in a lower rate of death...There are so many other things that are very dangerous and bad about this virus, don't get yourself into false complacency."

We must fight to remain vigilant. The end of this pandemic is not even remotely in sight; and its many hazards for caregivers, hospitals, and the community-at-large remain ever-present.

Is it safe to go to the ER during COVID-19 pandemic? YES!! In the midst of the outbreak, heart attacks, strokes and all other medical emergencies are still happening. Don’t delay care and put yourself at risk.
Methodist Hospital is taking extra precautions to keep patients safe and the following protocols are in place:
• Our ER is available 24/7/365 • We have segregated units for COVID-19 patients • Every person entering hospital is checked for fever • Every person inside hospital must wear a mask • Abundance of Protective Equipment (PPE)

If you experience signs of heart attack or stroke, such as chest pain or severe headache, call 911 or get emergency care immediately. DON’T WAIT.
