2016. It was the year I celebrated turning 40 with my childhood besties in Napa, and the year my daughter came into the world thanks to our incredible surrogate.

Some of my favorite patients from then are no longer with us now but I still think of them often 😢

Back then I used to get dressed up for work but since Covid I have been wearing scrubs everyday. (Saves a lot in dry cleaning fees!)

And I still decorate fresh Christmas trees every year with my kids, but my son doesn’t need a stepladder anymore! 🌲

These are dark times… but when I look at how ordinary citizens are rising to meet the moment with bravery and compassion- from peacefully gathering and even singing together in subzero temps, to delivering food to vulnerable families, to taking care of each other’s children in front of schools or driving neighbors to work, I can truly see the stars in the darkness and the humanity that will save us all.

It’s been a really heavy week. I’ve felt at various times sad, overwhelmed, and exhausted. So if you’re feeling the same way, know that you’re not alone. It has helped me to spend time with friends, take brisk walks, and focus on the things I can control, like my work. Let’s remember to be kind to ourselves and to each other, and that we are all in this together.
