Laura Doyle, co-owner of Moonstone Midwives, had the honor of speaking with Clare Wiley from KQED for an important article highlighting the growing maternity care crisis in rural Northern California, and the need for accessible, relationship-centered birth care in Humboldt County.

While the article centers Laura’s perspective, Moonstone has never been a one woman show! This birth center was built through the vision, dedication, and collaboration of many amazing people over many years. Moonstone Midwives was founded by Laura Doyle and Calista Young over 10 years ago alongside the original team of Suzanne Colby, Brandi Perez, and Ananda Morehead- the women who helped lay the foundation for the care we continue to provide today.

We are excited to share that Moonstone Midwives Birth Center has been awarded a grant from Humboldt Area Foundation + Wild Rivers Community Foundation through the Together, We Thrive ‘25-26 grant program. This opportunity helps us continue building the Moonstone Birth Sanctuary to include a space for community gatherings, maternal health education, postpartum support, childbirth classes, and continuing education for midwives and community birthworkers. In our rural county, a community space to connect, learn, and support one another makes a profound impact. This project will help strengthen our network of care for birthing families and the people who serve them.

A huge thank you to With Open Arms Center for Reproductive Choices for serving as our fiscal sponsor and partner in this work. We are grateful to work with to invest in the health, wellbeing, and systems of support for families in Humboldt County!

We’ve been in our new space for a little over 4 months now… ❤️ A HUGE THANK YOU to for turning our vision into reality and for getting this project done so quickly. We are endlessly grateful for everyone who worked so hard to make this happen. We have so much love for this wonderful community of ours!
