What is a Doula? The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. A Birth Doula…
• Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life

• Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor

• Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth

• Stays with the woman throughout the labor

• Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decision

• Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers

• Helps protect the woman’s memory of the birth experience

• Assists the woman’s partner to participate at his/her comfort level

Research evidence shows that the quality services of a postpartum doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family, improve parental satisfaction and reduce the risk of mood disorders.

POSTPARTUM SERVICES OFFERED BY THE DOULA SISTERS - What does postpartum mean?
Having a Doula during postpartum can help you feel relaxed, calm and supported.

Postpartum refers to the period after childbirth. Most often, this period is the first six to
eight weeks after delivery, or until your body returns to its pre-pregnancy state. But the
symptoms and changes that occur during the postpartum period can last throughout the
year and beyond.
Your body goes through many physical and emotional changes during this time, with
some symptoms lasting months after you give birth. Some changes are physical — for
example, breast engorgement and vaginal bleeding. Other changes occur due to
changing hormones. The bottom line is, giving birth is a major physical and emotional
challenge. Being a caregiver and adjusting to life with an infant during the postpartum
period is also incredibly demanding.
Your Doula can help you navigate this postpartum period by providing: ~
information and resources ~ breastfeeding support ~ help in navigating the emotional
and physical recovery from childbirth ~ support to establish skin-to-skin contact and
infant massage ~ techniques for infant soothing and coping skills for new parents ~ light
housework (fix a meal and help incorporate an older child into this new experience),
more!
What is the 5 -5 -5 Rule for postpartum? The 5-5-5 postpartum rule prescribes 15
days of rest for moms following childbirth – five days in bed, five days on the bed and
five days around the bed. It encourages moms to take a break from housework and
caring for older children and simply spend time with baby.
A postpartum Doula lends a hand and offers knowledge and support once you bring
your baby home.
Medi-Cal/Partnership insurance pays 100% of a specified number of visits for Doula
postpartum care. Private-pay clients are billed at $50 per hour.

The Portal After Birth Isn’t Just Physical—It’s Soul Deep

No one talks about how birth rearranges you from the inside out.
Not just your body, but your soul. Your values. Your nervous system. Your identity.

I’m in the thick of it right now—this postpartum portal.
And it’s not just about recovery.
It’s about remembering. Rebirthing. Rooting.

Some days I feel soft and clear. Other days I’m cracked open and questioning everything.
Where I live. How I mother. What I’m building. What I need now, in this new version of me.

There’s grief in this season. There’s joy, too. And a lot of in-between.
I’m learning to meet myself here—not trying to fix, rush, or numb it.
Just witness it. Feel it. Honor it.

This season is sacred.
Slow.
Wild.
Holy.

If you’re here too—navigating rebirth after birth—I see you.
You’re not behind. You’re not broken.
You’re becoming.
🦋

xoxo

Did you know midwives and doulas have different roles in the birth journey?

A doula provides emotional and physical support during labor, while a midwife is a healthcare professional who offers medical care to the birthing person.

We offer both professional medical care and compassionate support before, during, and after labor at Moonstone Midwives- to keep both the birthing person and baby safe, supported, and held.

Feeling supported not only during pregnancy and birth, but also in the postpartum time is so important to help birthing person feel grounded and confident- while also bringing comfort and a sense of safety to baby.

We are so grateful for the doulas and midwives of the world whose strength, grace, and wisdom does not go unnoticed. 💞
