Exceptional Health Brief: Norovirus & Stomach Illness
Stomach bugs can spread quickly in schools, households, and workplaces, and one of the most common causes is norovirus.
In this Exceptional Health Brief, Jennifer McCourt, Med-Surg Manager at Exceptional Community Hospital, explains how norovirus spreads, what symptoms to watch for, and when dehydration can become serious, especially for young children and older adults.
Symptoms often begin suddenly and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever or body aches. While most people improve within one to three days, warning signs such as dizziness, dry mouth, low urine output, or difficulty keeping fluids down should not be ignored.
Jennifer also shares important prevention tips, including proper handwashing with soap and water, disinfecting high-touch surfaces, and staying home for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.
If symptoms become severe or dehydration is a concern, our hospital team is here to provide the monitoring and care you or your loved one may need.
