New Research: Cannabis-Derived Medicine & Chronic Back Pain
Chronic lower back pain affects millions worldwide — and new, high-quality research is opening important conversations about safer pain-management options.
A large Phase 3, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial found that a cannabis-derived, full-spectrum plant extract medication (VER-01) significantly reduced chronic lower back pain compared to placebo. Participants also reported improvements in mobility, physical function, and sleep quality.
Importantly, the study found that side effects were generally mild to moderate and fewer serious risks were reported compared with those commonly associated with long-term opioid use.
Researchers stress that cannabis-based medicines are not a cure-all, but this study adds to growing evidence that they may serve as a potential alternative or complement to traditional pain treatments — under proper medical guidance and with further research.
