Every year, from August 1st to 7th, the global community observes World Breastfeeding Week—a time dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding as a critical component of infant health and maternal wellbeing. Established in 1992 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), this week-long event aims to encourage breastfeeding as the optimal source of nutrition for babies while highlighting its profound benefits for families and society. To this day, it’s one of the largest and most recognized global initiatives. Take the time to view this series on our blog. Link in our stories or comment WORLD

One of the biggest scams of modern parenting?
Thinking our babies need picture perfect nurseries, designer clothes, and a closet full of overpriced toys.
They don’t.
They need you.
They want your chest to sleep on, your voice singing off key lullabies, your eyes meeting theirs in the middle of the night.
They don’t care if their onesie was $4 from Walmart.
They don’t care if their crib is from a garage sale.
They don’t need Pinterest-worthy playrooms.
They need a safe place to fall asleep and a parent who loves them fiercely.

So if you’re a new parent drowning in “must-have” lists and Instagram pressure then listen to me:
You are the only thing they truly need.
Not the stuff.
Not the aesthetics.
You.

And you are already enough.

More than enough.

You always have been

“Connection isn’t a bonus—it’s the baseline for resilience, regulation, and trust.”

As a therapist, I’ve seen the research.
As a parent, I’ve lived the reality.

When kids feel connected—truly seen, heard, and emotionally safe—they’re better able to manage stress, bounce back from challenges, and form healthy relationships.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present.
Consistent, warm, attuned connection is the foundation they build everything else on.

So if you’re worried you’re not doing “enough,” start here:
Show up.
Stay close.
Be curious, not critical.

Connection first—everything else flows from there.

Want to dive deeper?
There’s more on this in my book Guidance from The Therapist Parent, available on my website www.thetherapistparent.com and on Amazon.

Breastfeeding into Toddlerhood

As your baby gets older, you may be wondering about the benefits of continuing to breastfeed beyond the first year of life. Breastfeeding a toddler or pre-schooler is called Natural Term Breastfeeding, is recommended by the WHO, and provides many benefits for both Mum and child.

Human milk continues to provide important nutrients for your little one as they learn and grow. For example, in the second year of life, 448ml (around 15 ounces) of breastmilk offers your nursling a huge 94% of their vitamin B12 requirements, 75% of vitamin A needs, and even 29% of their daily energy requirements. (Dewey, 2001)

As well as nutrients, some of the antibodies in human milk become more concentrated as your baby begins to spend more time exploring the world. This seems to be to protect your little one as they begin to put more interesting things in their mouths and spend more time with other children where they are exposed to more germs. (Perrin, 2016)

In addition, breastfeeding can also provide health benefits for you. It can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis. (Unar-Munguía M et al, 2017, Jordan et al, 2012, Wiklund et al, 2011).
