Laser Therapy for Incision Healing in 9 Dogs
Wardlaw, et.al.

Laser therapy is becoming common place in veterinary medicine with little evidence proving efficacy or dosages. This study evaluated surgical wound healing in canines. Twelve Dachshunds underwent thoraco-lumbar hemilaminectomies for intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Digital photographs were taken of their incisions within 24 h of surgery and 1, 3, 5, 7, and 21 days postoperatively. The first three dogs were used to create a standardized scar scale to score the other dogs' incision healing. The remaining 9 dogs were randomly assigned to either receive 8 J/cm2 laser therapy once a day for 7 days or the non-laser treated control group. Incision healing was scored based on the scar scale from 0 to 5, with zero being a fresh incision and five being completely healed with scar contraction and hair growth. All scar scores significantly improved with increasing time from surgery (

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on functional rehabilitation following hamstring strain injury (HSI) in amateur athletes treated with an exercise-based rehabilitation program.

Design: Randomized controlled trial.

Methods: Male athletes (18-40 years old) who sustained HSI were randomized in LLLT or placebo groups. All patients were engaged in the same exercise-based rehabilitation program until they met specific criteria to return to sport. Hamstring muscles were treated with LLLT or placebo immediately after each rehabilitation session. The primary outcome was time-to-return to sport. Secondary outcomes were the number of rehabilitation sessions, hamstring flexibility, hamstring strength, and re-injury rate.

Results: Twenty-four athletes began rehabilitation, and 22 (11 per group) completed the study schedule. Participants of LLLT and placebo groups had similar age, body size, injury characteristics, and baseline levels of hamstring flexibility and strength. The two groups increased flexibility and strength similarly throughout the rehabilitation program. Time-to-return to sport was the same for athletes treated with LLLT (23 ยฑ 9 days) and placebo (24 ยฑ 13 days). There were no re-injuries within 6 months after return to sport.

Conclusion: LLLT, as used in this study, did not optimize functional rehabilitation following HSI in amateur athletes treated with an exercise-based rehabilitation program.

DE OLIVEIRA, et.al. (full paper available click on HTML or PDF)

[...] Over the past several decades, physicians have become increasingly willing to prescribe opioids to manage pain. However, the opioid use can cause side effects as poor coordination, sedation, mood swings, depression, and anxiety combined with a dependence on the drugs. In the rehabilitation setting, patients benefit most when their health providers utilize a multimodal approach combining different types of therapies and when patients take on a significant role in optimal management of their own pain. The use of light as a therapeutic alternative form of medicine to manage pain and inflammation has been proposed to fill this void. Photobiomodulation therapy applied in the form of low-intensity Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) and light-emitting diode (LED) has been shown to reduce inflammation and swelling, promote healing, and reduce pain for an array of musculoskeletal conditions. There is evidence that photobiomodulation therapy reduces pain intensity in non-specific knee pain, osteoarthritis, pain post-total hip arthroplasty, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular diseases, neck pain, and low back pain. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to present the up-to-dated evidence about the effects of low-intensity LASER and LED (photobiomodulation therapy) on pain control of the most common musculoskeletal conditions. We observed that the photobiomodulation therapy offers a non-invasive, safe, drug-free, and side-effect-free method for pain relief of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions as well as fibromyalgia.
