Did you know that doulas support dads also?
Contrary to popular belief, we absolutely do not replace your partner in the birth space. Your Partner is the person in the room who knows and loves you most. However, hiring a doula can greatly enhance their experience during the birth as well.
Oftentimes, partners feel nervous about labor and how to be the best support. Many dads want to be helpful, but they are unsure of what to do. They want to keep their partner safe, they want their baby to be healthy, and they want to take away the pain of labor. If there is a complication to navigate, sometimes they are left scrambling to decipher medical terminology and make decisions. Dads often think they can look to the nurses for this kind of help, but unfortunately, with staffing, nurses spend over half of the labor time out of their patients' rooms.
That is a lot of pressure to put on our partners.
So we doula the dads too. We check in with how they are feeling every step of the way. We make helpful suggestions on how they can support their partner. We can give them a much-needed snack break or nap when the nights are long. We reassure them that everything is ok and that what they are seeing is normal (if it is), and help navigate situations when things are not so normal.
We take the pressure off.
We allow them the space to be present emotionally for their partners. To know we have the "other" stuff taken care of so they can hold hands, speak soft encouragement, and take in the moment. This is their birth experience, too.
As doulas, we support the family. Every member deserves compassion, empathy, and guidance to enjoy and embrace this beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
