Next week, we're tuning up again! 🎻

In music, tuning up is a place to begin, to ensure that each voice is being heard, reflected, shared, and amplified among a group. Tuning up creates a foundation on which we build harmony and encourage each voice to contribute something unique that ultimately adds beauty and interest to the music.

In this group, moms have the opportunity to "Tune Up" with other moms and engage with music in a supportive and welcoming space. Good chats and light snacks provided. No music experience is necessary.

Here's what folks are saying about Tune Up! 🎻

🎤 "I loved the meeting space, delicious snacks, and friendly conversations. And of course the singing!"

🎤 "What I liked best was trying something outside my comfort zone in a warm and supportive setting.

Join us as we gather again next week Monday, October 27th at 7pm!

Why Your Ticket Means More Than a Night Out

When you attend Rock the Town for Hearing, you’re doing more than enjoying a night of music, food, and fun. Your support directly enables:

▪️Music enrichment & literacy support for deaf and hard of hearing kids
▪️Access to hearing aids & vital technology through clinical outreach
▪️Programs that reduce isolation & empower families through community support & advocacy

It’s one thing to go out. It’s another to help children find their voices, their rhythm, their chance to connect.

🎟️ If you haven’t yet, get your ticket. If you want to bring your whole crew, reserve a table. Let’s make it a night of community. https://www.fhsr.org/events

Supporting a child with PANS or PANDAS requires an individualized, multimodal approach, and can be especially challenging to manage in non-verbal or pre-verbal children. Music Therapy can help by providing an alternative means of self-expression and emotional regulation.

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. Prospect Music Therapist Payton Cole, LPMT, MT-BC, examines how music may help people who are struggling.

💙 Music engagement through instrument play and/or services such as music therapy may provide individuals with opportunities for increased autonomy, potentially positively impacting one’s self-esteem and self-worth.
đź’™ Music creation & songwriting may improve self-expression & directly provide space for the unheard to be heard (ex: lyric writing, beat making, music performance).
Engaging with the words of others through song discussion or lyric analysis may encourage empathy and consideration of perspectives unrelated to one’s own lived experiences.
đź’™ Music is commonly experienced socially (ex: karaoke, dancing, choirs, concerts, etc.), so music may help to foster social connections & community building. Notably, connectedness to others is a protective factor against su***de, and in some some Indigenous communities tribal drumming and dance has been used as a culturally relevant practice to build community and reduce suicidal thoughts (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2024).
đź’™ Music listening is a common leisure activity that may allow one to recognize and process their emotions through the proxy of musical artists. Similarly, music engagement may support emotional regulation and be a salve for intense emotions, aiding individuals navigating mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression.

Music can provide tangible opportunities for reflection, expression, and community that may give onto positive change. Music alone, of course, is not the only answer, but it can help. Su***de prevention is not an individual task but that of communities in which collective care and action is centered. Through such action there is the possibility for death by su***de and suicidal ideation to be less common and for society to be one where the hope is not just to live, but to live well.

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, the 988 Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24/7/365. 988lifeline.org

It's not too late to tune up with us this evening! 🎻

Here's what folks are saying about our moms' group:

🎤 "I loved how low-key, informal, warm, and inviting it was. Letting people hear me sing is outside my comfort zone, but I felt totally safe and supported, and it was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to meeting more moms and having a fun, relaxing space to connect."

🎤 "What I liked best was that we were all moms spending time together and sharing about our days/challenges/successes."

Join us as we gather TONIGHT, Monday, September 29th at 7pm!

September is Deaf Awareness Month, and at FHSR, we’re proud to support children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) through programs that promote access, inclusion, and lifelong learning.

We’re celebrating the achievements of deaf and hard of hearing individuals all month long, including our Education Coordinator, Dr. Anna Tess. Dr. Tess provides free, personalized support to families in Illinois navigating school placement, IEPs, hearing technology, and more—helping ensure DHH students thrive academically and socially.

Dr. Tess also offers a range of FREE Parent Resources, including guides on advocacy, early literacy, and educational planning—available in both English and Spanish.

Join us this Deaf Awareness Month in amplifying access and inclusion for DHH children. Share this post, explore our resources, or consider supporting our work so families everywhere can benefit. fhsr.org/parents-resources
