💗 October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💗
At Center of Illinois Home Healthcare, we stand with the millions of women and families affected by breast cancer—not just during treatment, but throughout the journey of healing and recovery.
One often overlooked part of that journey is lymphedema, a condition that can develop after breast cancer surgery or radiation. It causes painful swelling, most commonly in the arms, and can significantly impact quality of life. But there is hope—and help.
📊 Did you know?
• 1 in 5 breast cancer survivors (approximately 20%) develop lymphedema after treatment, with rates exceeding 50% among those who undergo axillary lymph node dissection combined with radiation or chemotherapy.
• Lymphedema can appear months or even years after treatment, and without intervention, it may worsen and lead to infections, mobility issues, and emotional distress.
• Studies show that early treatment—including manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, and exercise—can significantly reduce swelling, improve physical function, and enhance quality of life.
