July is Dry Eye Awareness Month.

Did you know that over 16 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease — and many don’t even know it?

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or your tears evaporate quickly due to a lipid layer deficiency. Symptoms can include:

Just as the sun can damage your skin, it can also cause damage to your eyes. An immediate form of damage to the eyes is photokeratitis, or ‘sunburn of the eye’. This can cause extreme pain and discomfort, not to mention blurred vision. Long-term damage of the sun can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium, and even skin cancer on the eyelids and ocular melanoma. Protecting your eyes from UV radiation is a lifelong investment in your vision health. Just like sunscreen protects your skin, sunglasses protect your eyes from premature aging and disease. Make sure you are wearing sunglasses all year long.
