Stroke can happen to anyone, at any age. While stroke risk increases after age 50, we're seeing it become more common among younger adults too. Conditions like heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are likely contributors — which is why engaging in a healthy lifestyle matters at every stage of life. If you suspect someone is having a stroke, reach for the phone and call 911 right away. Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot, bursts or ruptures. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs.
