We are excited to share:

The Nirschl Orthopaedic Center will be opening up an additional office in Tysons, Virginia in September 2024. The new Tysons office will include physical therapy, creating the third Virginia Sportsmedicine Institute location.

Through this office, we hope to better serve our patients and provide those around the DMV area more access to high quality orthopedic care. The new office will be located close to the Tysons Corner Center mall and I-495 and I-66 for convenient access. The new Tysons office address will be:

To continue our goal to provide the best patient experience, the Nirschl Orthopaedic Center will be transitioning to a new electronic health records system in May 2024. This will allow our patients online access to review records, communicate with the office, and review and pay bills. It will provide better efficiencies for our world class providers to focus their care on you during your visits.

In order to prepare for this transition, the NOC offices will be closed for staff training on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 12pm-4pm and Friday, April 26, 2024 from 12pm-4pm.

Total Ankle Replacements are often recommended in severe cases of post-traumatic osteoarthritis within the ankle. This procedure can significantly improve function and activity level. Check out the video below featuring Dr. Matthew Buchanan, M.D. and one of his patients who received a Total Ankle Replacement from him, after a consultation here at Nirschl Orthopaedic Center.

Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, Tre’Davious White, and a local favorite, J.K. Dobbins, are a few of the players in the National Football League who have torn their Achilles tendon this season, a probable season-ending injury.

Achilles tendon ruptures are commonly caused during sports, but they can also occur during other acute mechanisms. They usually sound like a pop, or feel like a snap in the back of your leg, above your ankle. It may feel like something hit the back of your calf. There will likely be a lot of heel pain, and it will be challenging to flex the foot downward and walk on the injured foot. Often, these injuries occur with “Weekend Warriors”, middle aged adults and older who significantly increase their physical activity with intense exercise during their time off work.

Here at Nirschl Orthopaedic Center, Dr. Matthew Buchanan, M.D., our board-certified orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon, regularly performs minimally invasive Achilles repairs on patients who have recently had ruptures. Dr. Buchanan treats Achilles tendon ruptures of many professional and recreational athletes using advanced minimally invasive techniques, including the Arthrex SpeedBridge and PARS (Percutaneous Achilles Repair System). The SpeedBridge is the same technique that was used on Rodgers, who is moving through an accelerated recovery process. Compared to more traditional open surgical techniques, Dr. Buchanan explained that the minimally invasive techniques cause less surgical pain and decrease the chance of a wound healing complication. After surgery, he prescribes cutting-edge physical therapy protocols allowing immediate full weight bearing in a bootwalker. Dr. Buchanan’s main goal for his patients is a quick and active recovery.

Dr. Buchanan has 20 years of experience performing Achilles repair surgeries, among other foot and ankle procedures. If you think you have an Achilles injury, or any other problem with the foot and ankle, book an appointment for an evaluation from him as soon as possible!
