Preventing falls at home, especially for seniors, is essential for maintaining safety and independence.
Here are 10 tips to help prevent falls:
1. Remove Clutter:Keep walkways clear of clutter, including shoes, and other objects that can be tripped over.
2. Good Lighting: Ensure that your home is well-lit, especially in hallways, staircases, and bathrooms. Use night lights to illuminate paths to the bathroom at night.
3. Secure Rugs and Carpets: Use non-slip backing for area rugs, and secure loose carpets to the floor. Remove or tape down any loose edges.
4. Install Handrails: Install handrails on both sides of staircases, and in the bathroom (for the shower and near the toilet).
5. Bathroom Safety: Use non-slip mats in the bathtub or shower. Install grab bars in the shower or tub, as well as near the toilet. Consider a raised toilet seat.
6. Furniture Placement: Arrange furniture so that it doesn't obstruct walking paths, and use furniture with rounded edges.
7. Stair Safety: Ensure that stairs are well-maintained, with no loose steps or handrails. Use contrasting tape on the edges of stairs to make them more visible.
8. Proper Footwear: Wear well-fitting, non-slip shoes with low heels. Avoid walking around in socks or slippers.
9. Medication Management: Keep a list of your medications handy and make sure all your healthcare providers are aware of any that may cause dizziness or affect balance.
10. Vision Care: Regular eye check-ups are crucial. Poor vision can contribute to falls.
Stay Mindful! Be aware of your surroundings and your own limitations. If you feel unsteady, take your time and ask for help when needed.
