🖤👣 Honoring a Trailblazer in Medicine 👣🖤

During Black History Month, Podiatry Associates of Texas proudly recognizes Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.

In 1864, she graduated from the New England Female Medical College, breaking racial and gender barriers in a time when opportunities in medicine were extremely limited.

Dr. Crumpler dedicated her career to caring for women, children, and formerly enslaved individuals after the Civil War. She also authored A Book of Medical Discourses (1883), becoming one of the first Black physicians to publish a medical text.

Her courage, compassion, and commitment to underserved communities continue to inspire the healthcare profession today.

At Podiatry Associates of Texas, we honor her legacy by providing equitable, compassionate care to every patient because everyone deserves to walk confidently toward a healthier future. 👣💙

A severely curved toenail, referred to as a harpoon nail, is a structural nail shape in which the edges bend downward and form a tight arc as the nail grows. This shape alone can cause pressure and irritation because the nail naturally presses into the surrounding skin. An ingrown toenail, however, occurs when the nail edge actually pierces the skin and creates inflammation, swelling, and sharp discomfort. Although the two problems are connected, they are not the same. A curved nail increases the likelihood of developing an ingrown nail, but the ingrown portion is the injury that forms once the skin breaks. Shoes that squeeze the toe, trimming the nail too closely, or repeated pressure can turn a curved nail into an active ingrown issue. A podiatrist can relieve the painful area, reshape the edge, and determine if a minor procedure is needed to prevent recurrence. If your toenail shape keeps causing irritation, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for effective relief and treatment options.

Sever’s disease is a common growth-related heel condition that affects active children and adolescents during periods of rapid development. It occurs when repetitive stress and tension irritate the growth plate at the back of the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches. Causes often include running, jumping, tight calf muscles and overuse during sports activities. Risk factors may include high activity levels, wearing improper footwear, flat feet, or rapid growth spurts. A podiatrist can help by providing an accurate diagnosis recommending activity modification, custom orthotics, stretching, guidance, and supportive footwear to reduce strain on the heel. Early care can ease pain, improve mobility, and prevent ongoing discomfort. If your active child has heel pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and management tips.
