I’m very proud to be a hygienist for the past 19 years. But I wish I knew when I started what I know now about the importance of different screening we do. Most people think going in for your 6 month hygiene visit is just a cleaning. I promise you it’s so much more! Did you know your hygienist can help screen for airway issues—not just cavities?
At your routine hygiene visit, I look at more than just cleaning teeth. A healthy mouth is connected to healthy breathing!
Here are key airway-focused checks your hygienist should be looking at that I evaluate at each visit:
🔹 Tongue posture & tongue-tie evaluation
Is the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, or low in the airway? Restricted tongue movement can affect breathing, sleep, orthodontic relapse and oral development.
🔹 Nasal vs. mouth breathing
I watch how you breathe during the appointment. Breathing through the nose supports proper facial growth, body oxygenation, and better sleep.
🔹 Enlarged tonsils/adenoids or narrow throat space
I look at the size of the airway opening and check for signs of obstruction that may affect breathing or sleep in quality.
🔹 Jaw development & bite patterns
Crowded teeth, narrow arches, and retruded jaws can be signs of limited airway space.
🔹 Signs of sleep-disordered breathing
Grinding, scalloped tongue edges, dark under-eye circles, or chronic fatigue may be indicators that your airway needs attention.
Your mouth tells the story of how well you breathe.
Early detection = better outcomes. ✨
🦷💙 If you’re curious about airway health for you or your child, ask your hygienist or dentist at your next visit, and if they don’t answer your questions -because honestly this is not something that we get taught in hygiene or dental school, reach out. I love helping patients breathe better, sleep better, and live better.
