Ellenhorn A Community Treatment (PACT) team providing comprehensive, individualized and multidisciplinary psychiatric and psychosocial services

Ellenhorn is an effective alternative to long-term residential care, delivering intensive and individualized multidisciplinary services. We have three locations: Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City. For clients who are local to Boston or initially need more structure, we offer our innovative residential setting. As an evidence-based Program for Assertive Community Team (PACT), we have a high success rate with difficult cases that present co-occurring medical, substance misuse or complex psychiatric issues, and with clients who don’t fit into traditional residential programs. Our treatment approach combines psychosocial rehabilitation, medical/psychiatric care, and a focus on physical wellness. From day one, we work toward the client’s reintegration into the community, re-engagement with life, and rediscovery of a sense of purpose and hope. We believe that staying connected to the world is central to an individual getting better. Aside from psychosocial support, robust psychiatric care, vocational counseling, nursing, and non-pharmacological therapies, we provide direct support for our clients in regards to activities of daily living. As a PACT program, Ellenhorn is a “single source” model of treatment. Instead of providing only one component of a person’s treatment and referring-out for other services, we offer a full range of rehabilitation and treatment resources delivered by a multidisciplinary team. In this integrated approach to services, the “whole person,” rather than a cluster of symptoms is treated. SUPPORT INCLUDES:
Psychiatry/Psychopharmacology
Open Dialogue for Psychosis
Mentalized Based Therapy (MBT)
Wellness Coaching
Social Rhythms Therapy
Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT) for Substance Use
Community Integration
Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Medication Independence Planning
Transportation to clinical and community appts
Home and Community Based Services
Side-by-side cleaning
Independence planning

At Ellenhorn, we see every day how purpose, creativity, and community are central to healing. In our latest blog, we explore Van Gogh’s life and letters, imagining how access to a PACT team might have transformed his experience, and reflect on how this model of care continues to empower our clients to live fully, even amid extreme experiences of mind and mood. Read the full blog to learn why healing is about building a life worth living, not just managing symptoms.

Research shows that self-worth, connection, purpose, and support are not “extras” in recovery. They’re essential.

This video explores why rebuilding these social resources is key to overcoming barriers often mistaken for “resistance” and creating conditions for meaningful, lasting change.

We’ll be diving deeper into these principles at our True North Conference & Gala. Join the conversation on October 24! Register and learn more at www.ellenhorntruenorth.com

Why do some people pull back from change — not because they lack motivation, but because hope itself feels risky?

Learn about a concept developed by Ross Ellenhorn and measured through the Fear of Hope Scale, a tool he created in collaboration with a team of researchers at Rutgers University. This video explores why some people pull back from change, not because they lack motivation, but because past disappointments have made hope itself feel risky.

This kind of thinking is at the heart of Ellenhorn and the conversations we’ll be having at the True North Conference & Gala taking place October 24. Learn more and register at www.ellenhorntruennorth.com

Today is National Podcast Day, and we’re celebrating by highlighting the many conversations our founder and CEO, Dr. Ross Ellenhorn, has had on podcasts over the past year. In these episodes, Ross shares his perspectives on Ellenhorn’s humanistic approach to care, the importance of dignity in treatment, and how we can rethink the way we support people in their recovery journeys.

We invite you to mark the day by exploring our curated Ellenhorn Podcast Playlist on Spotify — a collection of thought-provoking conversations with Ross that capture the heart of our mission.

Join us for a powerful conversation on embracing uncertainty in clinical work!

October 20, 2025

on Zoom via TPN.Health

Ellenhorn’s Ross Ellenhorn, MSW, Ph.D. and Michael Groat, Ph.D. of Lindner Center of Hope will explore how clinicians and leaders can use uncertainty as fertile ground for discovery and growth—drawing on principles from Bion, Winnicott, and relational theory.

This past weekend, we gathered in NYC to celebrate 20 years of Ellenhorn at our True North Party, and what a night it was!

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who joined us. The food was delicious, the conversations were meaningful, and the breathtaking views of the NYC skyline made for a perfect backdrop as we reflected on two decades of community, innovation, and care.

Next, we’ll continue the celebration in Los Angeles (now at capacity), and then bring it all together at the True North Conference & Gala on October 24. This full day conference and black-tie optional evening will be the pinnacle of our anniversary year - a chance to honor our legacy and look ahead to the future.

Join us next Thursday!

Ellenhorn’s New Perspectives on Treatment series concludes next week with:
"The Art of Holding: Balancing Care and Autonomy in Psychiatry" with Kristin Budde, MD MPH
September 25 at 1:00 PM (EST) on Zoom via TPN.Health

“Holding,” first described by Winnicott in the 1940s, remains central to psychiatric care today. Psychiatrists can create a holding environment through diagnosis, prescribing, and presence—but what happens when care holds too tightly or not tightly enough?

In this session, Dr. Budde will explore how psychiatry can balance care and autonomy, including:
- How diagnoses and prescriptions can validate or constrain
- The role of revising diagnoses and de-prescribing as acts of holding
- Where the system lets people fall through the cracks

At Ellenhorn, we believe real change happens in the context of life, not in isolation.

In this short video, Ross Ellenhorn shares how our flexible, community-based model supports people where they are, tending to the whole ecology of a person’s life.

These are the ideas we’ll be celebrating and expanding on at our True North Conference & Gala. Learn more and register at www.ellenhorntruenorth.com.
