Before dental implant surgery, imaging tests help Dr. Patel at Arlington Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery determine if a bone graft is needed. These tests provide detailed, high-resolution images that reveal the bone’s density, volume, and structure at the planned implant site.

If the images show that there isn’t enough healthy bone to securely anchor an implant, Dr. Patel can identify the specific areas where bone is lacking and plan a bone graft accordingly. Imaging also helps map out vital structures like nerves and sinuses, ensuring that any grafting or implant placement avoids these areas for your safety.

Here's a general timeline of what will happen when your teen comes to Arlington Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for a wisdom tooth consultation. Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Even if your teen's wisdom teeth aren't painful, you should still come see us around this age to make sure they don't need to be removed!

Titanium is the material of choice for dental implants because it is highly biocompatible, meaning the body readily accepts it, and bone cells can attach directly to it. The dental implant fuses with the jawbone through a biological process called osseointegration. After our team surgically places the titanium implant post into your jawbone, your body begins a series of healing and integration steps. As the healing progresses, the jawbone fully integrates with the implant’s surface, creating a stable, permanent bond. This fusion allows the implant to function like a natural tooth root, supporting chewing and biting forces without loosening. Learn more about dental implants: arlingtonoms.com

One of the best things you can do for your teen? Schedule a wisdom tooth consultation at Arlington Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Even if their wisdom teeth aren’t causing pain, there could be issues developing beneath the surface, like impaction, crowding, or damage to nearby teeth. An early evaluation provides us with the opportunity to monitor growth, plan ahead, and help prevent future problems.

A dental implant is designed to replace a missing tooth from the root up. It starts with a fixture, which is placed into the jawbone where the natural tooth root used to be. Over time, the bone grows around this implant, securing it firmly in place, just like a real root.

Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, an abutment is attached. This connects the implant to a crown, which is the visible part of the tooth that sits above the gum. The crown is custom-made to match your natural teeth. Learn more about dental implants: arlingtonoms.com

What would happen if Dr. Patel recommended a bone graft before dental implant surgery, but you didn't get one? If a bone graft is skipped when needed, the implant may not integrate properly, leading to instability, pain, or even implant failure. Bone grafting is a common and important preparatory step for many patients seeking dental implants. If a bone graft is recommended to you, you're in good hands with our team at Arlington Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
