Best wishes to Terri Lynch but sorry to see a great adviser to the Arlington County Commission on Aging retiring!

It was a bittersweet Commission meeting for Terri Lynch, Director of the Arlington Agency on Aging. She has regarded the monthly meetings and working with Commission members as one of the highlights of her career serving older adults in our community. Now, after more than 30 years she is retiring.

Commission members describe Terri as an innovative and inspirational leader and dedicated public servant. Besides providing expertise to both the Commission on Aging and the Long-Term Care Residences Commission, Terri created and implemented services that make a real difference in the lives of older adults. In addition, she has advocated tirelessly on legislative issues which improve aging services. Terri is not only highly regarded in Arlington – she is recognized as a leader in the field of Aging at the State and National level as well.

Yesterday, President Obama held a “Fireside Hangout” on Google. Obama spoke from the Roosevelt room of the White House in this digital version of a Roosevelt’s fireside chat but he noted there was no actual fire.

Five participants, including Arlington resident, Lee Doren, asked questions submitted from the public regarding Obama’s State of the Union address. Notably missing was a discussion of issues relevant to older adults.

What makes a community livable for all ages? The list includes walkable neighborhoods with access to a variety of public transit options as well as entertainment & recreation, shopping & medical services. These features encourage the independence & mobility of older adults. National Forum for Aging Advisory Groups

A recent video highlights Arlington's transit-oriented neighborhoods. Check it out here:

'Active Living for All Ages: Creating Neighborhoods Around Transit' shows how transit-oriented development (TOD) facilitates the independence and mobility of older adults. Produced by AARP’s Public Policy Institute in collaboration with Streetfilms.

It's great to see all this support building, people taking time from their busy days to attend meetings like this, and contributing both their ideas and experiences. Thanks.

Terrific turnout for the 35th Senior Law Day. Great hearing from Judge Alper, Theo Stamos, Barbara Favola and Elizabeth Wildhack.

2 tips from Judge Alper:
1. If you don’t want your heirs fighting over your belongings get your legal documents in order. Especially your Power of Attorney.

2. For entertainment, come to the Arlington Court House and watch live cases instead of sitting in front of the TV watching CSI and Law & Order.
