Nature's wardrobe change--Autumn

You may not be in a grand vista such as that depicted in the linked video, but chances are, you've got some representation of Nature nearby, whether in a park, plants in your home, trees outside. Of course, where you are in the country will show a different range and shades of color, not to mention temps and other conditions, but it is good to be in natural surroundings, and best when outdoors. As we've mentioned, nature has a beneficial effect on your health by relaxing us, easing our minds, giving new perspective on things, and offering a chance to experience something pleasing to many our senses.

If you need a no-cost getaway, play and replay as needed. Courtesy of CBS Sunday Morning.

The upcoming season often signifies refreshing air, but, chances are, you won't always have the benefit of that being the only thing your lungs breathe in. Keep the following in mind for clear air passages and good pulmonary health.

Seems we're in another round of allergies for a lot of people. But it may be hard to tell what's causing sneezing, runny noses, and/or breathing issues, since there can be a lot of factors that contribute to such symptoms. Inside or outside, we can be exposed to poor air, chemicals, mold spores, dust, gas, and/or other agents that can have a range of effects on our pulmonary health. And repeated or ongoing exposure can result in extensive harm. We probably can't avoid them all the time, but some common sense, such as wearing a mask when in those environments, and thoughtful lifestyles (e.g., exercise, nutrition) can help keep our bodies strong and our noses and airways literally clean, for the good of our pulmonary and overall wellbeing .

"Back-to" ads have been sounding the start of school for some weeks now, but it's not necessarily the end of summer (according to the calendar). And the upcoming holiday weekend, which recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of workers nationwide, is also known for a lot of travel and recreational activities. And that's a good reminder to take care of ourselves throughout the year, because overdoing anything doesn't help us toward maintaining good health. When we take care of ourselves through physical (e.g., walking, biking, swimming, weight-resistance training, etc.) and mental fitness (e.g., puzzles, reading, learning new skills), you feel and function better, and it makes for better life experiences, in general, home, office, and elsewhere.

And in that spirit, Dr. Nick and colleagues at Personal Care Chiropractic wish you a good and safe Labor Day weekend!

Metabolic Syndrome, a Concoction of Conditions for the Worse

We hope summer is proving relaxing, energizing, and/or whatever else is good for your well-being. In discussing health-related topics, we've often heard about basic aspects of our biology that have an influence over them, such as blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, and others. While we know that each of these on their own can impact our health risk, when three or more are in an unhealthy state at the same time, collectively known as "metabolic syndrome," the danger escalates greatly for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other grave conditions. But, fortunately, we usually have at least some say in how bad (or good) any of these get ...

Strolling Solo and Silent When the Need Arises

We've frequently heard about the benefits of walking, an easy and accessible way to get some physical activity, as well as some time to socialize with a friend or, in Steve Jobs' case, conduct a meeting outdoors. But what about times when we may feel particularly pressured and overwhelmed by goings-on in life, raising our stress and levels of upset? In such cases, you may want to consider the benefits of a "silent" walk as an option, where you stroll on your own without the distraction of music in your ears, a mobile device in your hand, or someone by your side. And then, you can experience the environment directly and let your senses (and mind) engage with your surroundings in a way, without "obstacles," that rejuvenates, restores composure, calms the nerves and mind, so you can get grounded, again, so to speak.

Here’s why experts are making some noise about the mental and physical health benefits of TikTok’s ‘silent walking’ trend.

Dorsal Discomfort. Could It Be What You Ate for Dinner?

Among the usual suspects of back pain, poor posture, deviated discs, etc. come to mind. But did you know that what you eat may also contribute? Not directly, but it can trigger what is called "referred pain," where the source of the problem is somewhere other than where you actually experience the discomfort. For example, think of foot problems that result in back pain. Something similar can happen when you eat, if it causes esophageal irritation ...

This summer keep a level head by ensuring your electrolytes are in-balance.

Many the world over have been experiencing hotter-than-average conditions. Regardless, under even normal conditions, we're aware of the importance of proper hydration during the warmer seasons and in circumstances where we may lose fluids (e.g., exercising, physical activities). Along with the water, we could lose valuable substances known as electrolytes. These are known to many by the more-familiar names of potassium, sodium, calcium, and others, and their responsibilities include adjusting and balancing our bodily fluid levels, activating muscle movement, and sending signals to cells and organs, as part of our proper, healthy functioning. When electrolyte levels get out-of-balance, dizziness, fatigue, and cramps can set in, to name only a few symptoms. But restoring balance is usually straightforward (unless the imbalance is due to an underlying health condition or medication, in which case medical assistance may be needed), starting with water, though higher-electrolyte containing drinks and foods may be needed for an extra boost to right yourself, if you're particularly depleted or at risk of being so.
