💚 | Facing Our Fears: Understanding Phobias
As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s shed light on one of the most common—but often misunderstood—mental health conditions: phobias.
A phobia is more than just fear—it’s a persistent, overwhelming, and irrational anxiety triggered by a specific object, activity, or situation. Even when patients know their fear is irrational, it can feel impossible to control—and deeply impact their daily life.
📊 Did you know?
• Up to 10% of people experience a phobia at some point in their lives
• Women are slightly more likely than men to be affected
• Some phobias start in childhood and fade, while others persist into adulthood
🔍 Common Phobia Triggers:
• Animals (e.g., dogs, snakes, spiders)
• Social settings or public speaking
• Flying, tunnels, or enclosed spaces
• Needles, medical procedures, storms
• Unique fears (e.g., clowns, computers)
💥 Symptoms may include:
• Panic, dread, or desire to escape
• Sweating, trembling, chest pain
• Shortness of breath or nausea
• Lightheadedness or feeling out of control
