Bay Radiology was the first facility in Anne Arundel county to offer 3D mammography (also called tomosynthesis), which is a much more detailed mammogram. This revolutionary technology allows the radiologist to see individual thin "slices" of tissue (similar to a catscan). Studies are showing an increase in cancer detection of over 40%, and also a 40% reduction in the need for additional imaging. We are now the first in the state to offer ultra-high resolution (70 micron) 3D mammography--even better images for the same low radiation doses. At Bay Radiology, each patient has her imaging completed in one visit. We do not "call patients back" for additional imaging; if there is an abnormality on the mammogram, it is worked up immediately. The office is private, calm and spa-like and service is quick and efficient. Parking is right outside the door; no need to drive around a parking garage. We offer screening and diagnostic 3D mammography, screening and diagnostic ultrasound performed by our physician, and minimally-invasive percutaneous biopsies performed right at our office (with ultrasound, stereotactic and tomographic guidance).

Well, we tried it (extending our schedule to 5 10 hour days), but I just can't sustain it. I need to help my mom and sister (my dad went into hospice care this week) and my kids both have special needs and are both having some issues. I was really hoping to find another full time radiologist but it seems that they all just want to read mammograms from home (other places started doing this during the pandemic but it doesn't work with our model). We are lucky to have Dr. Maria Schmidt who is an excellent very experienced breast imager covering for me when I am away. And we are making one other change. Effective immediately, Bay Radiology will be open Mon - Thursday 7am - 5:30pm (40 hours). All mammograms performed between 7am - 4pm will be reviewed while the patient is here. If a patient has her mammogram between 4pm-5:30pm I will review those later that night or early the next day and she will have her results the next day. We'll be closed on Fridays. I am sorry to those of you whose appointments have been rescheduled (and sometimes re-rescheduled!) as we have had to move things around the health appointments for my loved ones. Thank you for your patience with that! Laura Amodei, MD

We need your help! There's a huge shortage of breast imagers--women are having to wait weeks or months for appts. Also, many of you have asked us to add your sister/mother/daughter/friend as a new patient. I love showing everyone their images and catching up, but my primary goal is to catch as much early breast cancer as we can, so we are making a few changes. First, we are extending to 10 hour days. Next, we are accepting some new patients so if someone you know is overdue, please have them give us a call. How you can help: if you don't have problems/questions, please try one of our 'shorter' appts--I still review your images while you are at the office but if everything looks good, your technologist will give you your letter (any issues, you still see me). And for local patients with no significant history, we are offering efficient 'image and leave' appointments on Mondays and Tu-Fri later afternoons (these patients will get their results the next day & 12% will have to come back). Thoughts? Questions? Always appreciate your input! Laura Amodei

Update! Masks are now optional at Bay Radiology. Not political--based on science that shows that the death rate from the current COVID variants is now lower than the death rate for flu prior to the pandemic, including in patients over 65. Masks may be required again in the future, depending on future variants. And we are happy to don masks for patients who continue to prefer this. Questions/concerns: please email Dr. Amodei at lamodei@bay-radiology.com.

Same day answers
Patients have the option to meet with Dr. Amodei at the time of their imaging studies. Full work-ups can be completed in one visit—so that patients can leave with answers, not questions. In most cases, patients who are found to have a lump or other problem can be seen that same day.
Fellowship-trained breast imagers
Most mammograms, including many in our local market, are read by general radiologists who have completed only 3 months of required training in breast imaging during their 5-year residency. These general radiologists may only read mammograms once or twice a month. In contrast, Dr. Amodei completed dedicated fellowship training in breast imaging at Johns Hopkins and has specialized in women’s imaging for over 14 years.
State of the art technology
Mammograms with tomosynthesis (aka 3D mammograms) have been shown to increase detection of invasive breast cancer (the ones that matter most) by 40%, and decrease false alarms by 15-40%. We are the first in Maryland to offer Clarity HD ultra-high resolution tomosynthesis and also utilize state of the art i2D to substantially decrease radiation doses.
Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy
What is the point of finding a tiny cancer with tomosynthesis if you can’t biopsy it accurately? Bay Radiology was the first facility in Anne Arundel County to offer tomosynthesis-guided biopsy, so our team is very experienced. Stereotactic biopsies can also be performed using our system and are typically much more comfortable than procedures performed on traditional prone tables.
Comfortable curved mammo paddle
Our new mammogram paddles have rounded edges and are curved, not flat, so they better fit the contours of the breast. 93% of women find them more comfortable!
Physician-performed ultrasound
In many centers, breast ultrasound is performed by a technologist. At Bay Radiology, all breast ultrasound is performed by the interpreting physician. This allows the physician to examine the breast and directly correlate the palpable lump or other abnormality with the imaging findings in real time rather than relying on a technologist. This also means that the patient gets to review her images directly with the physician on the day of the examination.
