🐾✨ Happy National Kids and Pets Day! ✨🐾

Today we celebrate the incredible bond between kids and pets—and the comfort, joy, and healing they bring into each other’s lives. 💛

When 6-year-old A’miree was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer and her baby brother Amil needed open-heart surgery, their family was suddenly facing unimaginable challenges.

With so much happening at once, they were introduced to the Stink Bug Project at RMCHF, which connected them with Ace, a loving companion dog. 🐶

Ace quickly became part of their family—offering comfort during long hospital days, strength during hard moments, and plenty of tail wags when they were needed most.

There’s something truly special about the bond between a child and their dog, and through the Stink Bug Project at RMCHF, Ace has made all the difference for A’miree and Amil. 💙

🐾 Where do Stink Bug dogs come from, and how are they trained?🐶

All of our Stink Bug dogs are trained through the Prison-Trained K9 Companion Program. This unique program pairs dogs with inmate trainers who are master trainers, teaching them obedience skills, structure, and how to be well-mannered, loving companions. Through this training, the dogs learn how to thrive in a home and become the perfect match for kids with challenging medical conditions.

Once their training is complete, Stink Bug dogs are carefully matched with families based on what each family is looking for. Families can also send their own dog into training through the program to help strengthen skills and support their needs.

What is The Stink Bug Project?🐶

The Stink Bug Project, a program of the Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation, matches specially trained companion dogs with children facing serious medical conditions.

These dogs provide comfort, emotional support, and a sense of normalcy during incredibly difficult times. While they are not service dogs, they become loving companions who help reduce stress and bring joy to both the child and their entire family. 🐾

We believe kids and dogs equal magic!✨

💙 Finding Courage Through Play 💙

“Lemon needs surgery today too. I’m going to fix her broken arm.”
Before his own procedure, Campbell turned to Lemon in a powerful way—stepping into the role of the helper. By “taking care” of Lemon, he was able to process what was happening, feel a sense of control, and build the courage he needed to face his own surgery.

Moments like this show how comfort, connection, and a little imagination can help kids feel braver during some of their hardest days.
