Today, the Administration announced steps toward dismantling the Department of Education, which would be devastating to the students served by many OT practitioners.

As it stands now, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) would remain at ED, but K-12 education programs would be moved to the Department of Labor. AOTA strongly believes that general education should not be separated from special education, and that K-12 programs must be administered by a department focused on the education of students.

We are working closely with coalition partners to coordinate efforts to amplify OT’s voice, and engaging with our Congressional champions, on both sides of the aisle, about the importance of protecting the essential role of ED in supporting students and ensuring access to high quality education for all.

You have a voice through AOTA. Take action now to remind Congress of IDEA’s importance: aota.org/takeaction 👈

The Department of Education (ED) announced its intent to move forward with new rules that would fundamentally change how graduate students finance their education. Master’s and doctoral occupational therapy degree programs would not be classified as professional programs, but instead as graduate programs with a significantly reduced tuition cap.

Put simply, this means that future occupational therapy students would be subject to a drastically lower loan limit—putting the future of the profession at risk.

What’s next? AOTA already has spent months spearheading advocacy efforts to change the definition of professional programs. Congress can fix this—but we need your voice. Go to www.aota.org/takeaction to let Congress know that occupational therapy must be included in any definition of a professional program. Read more about the issue in our new article. https://www.aota.org/advocacy/advocacy-news/2025/federal-student-loan-limits-where-we-stand-and-what-comes-next-for-ot

Use the Infinity Loop to Cross Midline & Strengthen Visual Tracking Skills!

Visual skill development is one of the most important foundations for reading and writing success. Kids use their eyes to guide their hands, scan across a page, and follow text from left to right, all skills that rely on strong eye muscle control and smooth tracking movements.

The infinity loop (or lazy 8) is a simple way to help!
Have kids trace an infinity loop in the air, on paper, or on a wall. Slowly and smoothly with their eyes and hands.

Try it as:
✨ A brain break between lessons
✨ A warm-up before handwriting practice
✨ A movement-based activity during flashcard or reading tasks

These small visual exercises build crossing midline, bilateral coordination, and tracking endurance, helping kids stay focused and efficient learners.

Before a child can manage their emotions, they first need to notice them.
That begins with interoception — the hidden sense that helps the brain read the body’s signals.

A racing heart, a heavy chest, butterflies, a tight tummy — these are the body’s early messages.
When a child can’t interpret them, emotions can appear “sudden” or “out of nowhere.”
They’re not ignoring how they feel — their brain simply isn’t getting a clear signal yet.

Understanding interoception helps us respond with patience, not punishment — and teach children how to recognise what their body is trying to say.
