The AAP recommends swim lessons as a layer of protection against drowning. Many kids will be ready to start lessons at age one. Here are a few things to keep in mind while choosing a program:

1. Are the instructors trained and certified through a nationally recognized learn-to-swim curriculum? Are there lifeguards on duty who have current CPR and First Aid certifications?

2. Do they teach good safety habits in, on and near water?

3. Do they teach your child what to do if they end up in the water unexpectedly?

4. Do they offer adapted aquatics for children with special health needs and developmental disabilities?

Pediatricians have recommended the vitamin K shot at birth for decades to provide babies with the defense needed to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB).

Newborns need vitamin K at birth because they aren’t born with enough of the vitamin and they receive very little from their mother during pregnancy. Unlike many other nutrients, it doesn’t cross the placenta easily, and their intestines don’t yet have enough bacteria to produce it on their own. Pediatricians can answer any questions parents have on the vitamin K shot.

To keep antibiotics effective for everyone, here’s what NOT to do:

❌ Do not use antibiotics for colds, flu or sore throats. Antibiotics do not treat viruses.
❌ Do not share your antibiotics with others.
❌ Do not save leftover antibiotics for use later.

Let’s protect life-saving medicines for everyone!
