Inova Emergency Room - Ashburn

You all have personally been angels on earth in my Chronic Illness journey. I made this to thank people like you during this time and always.

EDIT: Below was my experience the Friday before New Years. I'm editing my comments now because of how the hospital responded this this. I got a call from Doctor Denise Bernier and Margaret with Patient Relations. The doctor agrees with my perspective and felt more could have been done for me. They were both very apologetic and were very appreciative that I shared this information so that they can better educate their staff. They even took care of the bill for me. I did get a good feeling that they will address the issue and the experience at the hospital will improve.

Worst experience ever. I'm the type of person that you know it's got to be bad if I say I need to go to ER.
Nurse Wan: what seems to be the problem?
Me: my ear just popped 30 minutes ago and I'm in excruciating pain. I'm told I can't take ibuprofen because I'm taking these medicines. (I put on the table. She never looked at them. She was just checking boxes on her computerized form)
Nurse Wan: how bad is the pain?
Me: 9 out of 10.
Nurse Wan: how did you get here?
Me: I drove myself and regret doing so. I probably shouldn't have.
Nurse Wan: Doctor Lamb will be with you shortly.
Doctor Lamb: what seems to be the problem
Me: excruciating ear pain.
Doctor Lamb (seems annoyed and confused): why did you choose to come to ER?
Me: I had no idea what I was supposed to do 10pm on a Friday night. I'm in a lot of pain and don't know what I can take for it. It couldn't wait until Tuesday when doctors office opens up (it's new year's on Monday). I drove around looking for an urgent care but couldn't find anything open this hour. That's how I found this place.
Doctor Lamb: I see some fluid in your ear and it is red. Unfortunately nothing I can do for you. Try Tylenol.
Me: nothing at all? I'm in a lot of pain.
Doctor Lamb: ask pharmacist for Sudafed decongestant. You have to get it from the pharmacist as it is a controlled substance. I'm not from around here let me go see if I can find out if there is a 24 hour pharmacy open. (She abruptly leaves)
(10 min later nurse returns with discharge papers with a form for me to sign acknowledging they answered all my questions)
Me: what happen to the doctor? I can't sign this. I have questions and thought she was giving me a prescription. She just left.
Nurse Wan (ignoring what I asked as she reads to me the discharge instructions): go home and take ibuprofen.
Me: wait... What? I told you I can't take it!
Nurse Wan: get some sleep. You will feel better
Me: sleep? How? I'm in a lot of pain. Is there anything at all that can be done to relieve some of the pressure? What about the prescription and the pharmacy information? I have questions and the doctor just walked off and told me she would be back.
Nurse Wan: I'll go ask the doctor
(30 minutes later. Doctor Lamb walks in with her hands on her hips, clearly annoyed. I have been very pleasant and polite the whole time.)
Me: I thought you were giving me a prescription.
Doctor Lamb: no prescription. You just ask the pharmacist for it.
Me: I'm in a lot of pain. I don't think I can drive like this. Are you sure there is nothing you can do to help relieve some of the pressure or make me more comfortable somehow? Can I take Aleve? I know I have that at home. I don't think we have any Tylenol.
Doctor Lamb: no. You will need to pick up some Tylenol

They sent me on my way with no care in the world how I was getting home or if I was driving. Especially after telling her I drove myself and probably shouldn't have. Doctor Lamb seemed annoyed from the beginning and more concerned with why someone with just an ear ache would come to the ER and didn't seem to care how much pain I was clearly in. My blood pressure was elevated, and I was sweating. I did drive around looking for somewhere I could buy Tylenol. I was in too much pain to wait for someone to pick me up. I nearly threw up from the pain getting into my car. I have no idea why they couldn't have given me Tylenol there and give me some time to see if it helps before I attempted to drive myself to find Tylenol.
