Dental Trivia on President's Day

Happy President’s Day! And now for your daily dose of historical dental trivia… George Washington’s dentures were NOT made of wood! They were made of human teeth (some his own), bone and ivory from hippopotamus, walrus and elephant, and lead. He only had one real tooth in his whole head! Historians believe the wood myth began because of the staining caused by his love of madeira wine. In particular the stains in the cracks in the material were thought to have created a wood grain look. You can see President Washington’s dentures on display at the Mount Vernon museum and estate. Nadia began her career as an assistant in a dental office. She loved interacting with patients and the high energy of a dental office so much, she decided to go to school to become a hygienist. She graduated from the dental hygiene program at Virginia Commonwealth University and has been with Loudoun Smile Center since 2021. Aren’t we lucky?! Nadia grew up in Ashburn (She’s a Broad Run alumna - go Spartans!) and has settled here as well.
