Yes, yes, YES!!! Say it louder for the people in the back!!! 👏👏👏Thank you The Gottman Institute for bringing a bright light to this incredibly important dynamic!

For many neurodiverse relationships to thrive, it’s important to focus on understanding the differences in how you and your partner process information and how this impacts your ability to understand each other.

"If you are the neurodivergent partner, recognize your own sensitivities to light, sound, touch, smell, taste, and sense so you can communicate them to your partner. If you are the neurotypical partner, understand how these can impact your partner’s nervous system and how their ability to manage them is compromised. Honoring and meeting these basic needs for nervous system regulation can play a huge role in developing intimacy and bringing the relationship closer." - Yolanda Renteria, LPC, NCC

Dr. Gottman’s research shows that couples who start arguments gently are more likely to manage conflict effectively, without harming the relationship. One of the hardest things to do in a relationship is to be nice to your partner when you’re upset with them. It’s also one of the most important moments to be kind. The final step of Emotion Coaching is helping your child problem-solve with limits. All emotions are acceptable but all behaviors are not. Help your child cope with his or her emotions by developing problem-solving skills.
Sometimes the steps of emotion coaching happen quickly. Other times, these steps may take a great deal of time. Patience is key. If the problem is a big one, all five steps don’t have to be completed in one interaction.
