This week we're shining a light on Advanced Practice Providers, including Physician Assistants/Associates (PAs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), and Certified Nurse-Midwives.

At MAHEC, our APPs assess, diagnose, treat, and manage illnesses, prescribe medications, and conduct preventive screenings on patients with safe, high-quality, evidence-based care. We're grateful for your work and compassion!

FRIDAY FACTS about MAHEC's School-Based Therapy program as it marks its 5th year of providing compassionate mental health services to our region's children:

• School Year 2020–2021: Began in August 2020 with 12 therapists in 13 Buncombe County schools.

• School Year 2023–2024: Served more than 1,500 unique patients over 20,000 visits.

• School Year 2024–2025: Expanded to 48 licensed therapists embedded in 54 schools across Buncombe, Haywood, Madison, and McDowell counties, serving 1,700 students in more than 24,000 visits.

• School Year 2025–2026: Services expanded to 83 schools with 61 therapists on board by October.

It's Healthcare Simulation Week! Fun fact: MAHEC hosted 502 programs for 14,770 participants at our 15,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art Simulation Center last year, providing opportunities to practice life-saving procedures without putting real patients at risk. mahec.net/cpd/simulation_center

News of a different sort today! We recently honored Ron Fagan, MAHEC Director of Facilities Management, at an event marking his retirement--41 years to the date since he came to MAHEC for a 3-week temp job & never left (by his calculation, that’s nearly 15,000 days).

• SONOGRAPHER: Working at our Women's Care at Brevard office, perform a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgement and initiative in the utilization of ultrasound in a dedicated perinatal and gynecology facility. ARDMS registration and active status required.

• SCHOOL-BASED BEHAVIORAL THERAPIST: Provide outpatient mental health treatment in an assigned school setting in the Enka/Erwin district. This is a full-time opportunity with the month of July scheduled off.

• GME RESIDENCY CURRICULUM SPECIALIST: Based in the Hendersonville Family Health Center Clinic, provide day-to-day administration of the resident curriculum and clinical learning experiences through collaboration with the Residency Program Administrator and Residency Program Director.

Supporting Excellence in Graduate Medical Education

The Office of Graduate Medical Education provides support for Medical Residency and Fellowship Programs participating in graduate medical education at the Mountain Area Health Education Center. MAHEC is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program, Dental National Matching Service, and other advanced residency and fellowship matching programs.

We are pleased to support MAHEC’s three family medicine residency programs located in Asheville, Hendersonville, and Boone, NC, and residency programs in dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology, pharmacy, psychiatry, and surgery. Our office also supports post-residency fellowships in sports medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.
