Last month, MAHEC was honored to serve once again as a co-host of the WNC Health Policy Initiative Legislative Summit, alongside UNC Asheville and Dogwood Health Trust. More than 100 people, including state policy makers and regional health leaders, joined this gathering with a shared commitment to improving the health of the communities we serve.

MAHEC's next Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course is coming up for physicians, PAs, NPs, Nurses, EMT/EMS/Paramedics and others caring for the pediatric population.

Held at our Simulation Center, this video-based, instructor-led AHA course uses simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systemic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics.

The goal of the course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. Sign up here or find additional dates this year: mahec.net/home/event/77501

MAHEC was honored to participate in the 2026 Rural Summit, joining rural champions from across the state in conversations about how infrastructure and community assets work together to support the health and vitality of North Carolina’s rural communities.

Held each spring, the NC Rural Center's Rural Summit brings together local, state, and national leaders to learn, connect, and explore how we can move NC forward—this year with a focus on infrastructure needs, successes, and what lies ahead.

It was a great event and we're especially grateful to Governor Josh Stein for the MAHEC shoutout!

🎉The excitement of Match Day 2026 is still going strong at MAHEC. We can’t wait to welcome our 96 newest learners to MAHEC and to the mountains this summer!

This talented next generation of providers comes from schools located across the country—spanning from Detroit to Durham, Blacksburg to Brooklyn, Galveston to Greenville, El Paso to Sioux Falls, and everywhere in between.

With nearly 230 residents and fellows currently training across multiple specialties, MAHEC’s graduate medical education programs continue to grow at an impressive pace—supporting our mission to develop the next generation of healthcare providers and expand access to care throughout Western North Carolina.

Supporting Excellence in Graduate Medical Education

The Office of Graduate Medical Education provides support for Medical Residency and Fellowship Programs participating in graduate medical education at the Mountain Area Health Education Center. MAHEC is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program, Dental National Matching Service, and other advanced residency and fellowship matching programs.

We are pleased to support MAHEC’s three family medicine residency programs located in Asheville, Hendersonville, and Boone, NC, and residency programs in dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology, pharmacy, psychiatry, and surgery. Our office also supports post-residency fellowships in sports medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.
